safety in lima, peru
 

We are flying into Lima, Peru. Are there areas of the city that are safe? Suggestions for hotels would be welcome.

I stayed in Miraflores, one of the more popular tourist areas, and felt quite safe. I really wasn't uncomfortable in the historic district, either, but then, I am from a large city. Usual "city rules" apply! :) My hotel there was Jose San Antonio, which was fine although certainly not unique in character.

Miraflores is quite nice, with the best hotels I believe. As in any part of the world, just watch your back. Keep your money in a safe travel wallet not in your pockets. San Isidro is nice too. El centro can be hectic, mostly visit office workers at lunch (think NYC) but worth a stroll. There are great little restaurants near the cathedral of San Francisco church (visit the Catacombs here!). One word of caution - don't drink tap water - is not as bad as Mexico but it affects even the sturdiest gringo belly. My family tells me that the weather is getting nicer (hello Spring!) so you'll have a great time.

I highly recommend the Hotel Antigua Miraflores. Very charming, good breakfast, lovely garden with fountain and easily accessible to several excellent restaurants. You can do a search with my screen name for my trip report from last November.
