Safety First - what country???
 

Any recommendations for a safe Latin American country for an active couple aged 30 and 38. Beach, hiking, adventure tourism.<BR>Would appreciate your input.

Felt safe in both Belize and Costa Rica.

I have not been to Belize, but visited Costa Rica twice in the last two years and felt totally safe. Costa Rica also has what you're looking for: beaches, nature, adventure, great hiking.

I have always felt perfectly safe in the interior of Mexico, excluding Mexico City. Some of the colonial cities are very nice and are said to have less violent crime than many major cities in the U.S. I make sure to find out all i can about a specific place before I go.

Dunya, have you heard of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico? Is it very far from Mex.City? I've heard it's a very laid back comfortable town, but a bit expensive.

I have heard of San Miguel, but have not been there. I have traveled a lot in the north and a lot in the south, but not visited the heartland of Mexico. I do hear lots of good things about it from many people. I go to Oaxaca twice a year. The city seems very safe to me. I have been going there for 10 years, my kids are now teenagers and they walk around by themselves. The locals tell me there is virtually no violent crime. Likewise my American friends that live there tell me the same. There are reports of inter-tribal violence amongst various indigenous groups once you get out in the country. Likewise there are reports of some bus robberies on the rural routes to the coast. So far we have not had a problem anywhere.

Janet,<BR>I've been to San Miguel de Allende. It's a beautiful colonial town and has some decent shopping, but has no beach, hiking or adventure. If that's important to you, I'd go to Costa Rica. I've been there 7 times. It's safe and beautiful and has the beaches, rainforest, hiking, white water rafting, horseback riding, fishing, coffee plantations...for an active couple, it's perfect.
