Rough Seas in Cancun and Mayan Riviera

I have heard that beaches in Cancun and the Mayan Riviera are not safe to swim from - especially for children. Any comments?

I would agree with that statement. One exception would be the lagoon at Akumal.
See locogringo.com

In Cancun stay on the isla Mujeres bay side--nice safe beaches. Presidente,
Calinda Viva and Fiesta Americana Coral Beach would all have great beaches

Another alternative would be Isla Mujeres ( 10 miles off Cancun) which would be considerably less expensive and Norde beach is very nice for children. The beach at Akumal is extemely safe in my opinion. The only thing I would recommend are water shoes (there are some sea urchins - but not a lot). Wave action is very mild.

The beaches from Cancun south are no more dangerous than the beaches on the eastern side of the US. Of course it can get rough when stormy, but on the bays in the Akumal and Tankah area there is little wave action.

http://CasaTropical.com
Casa Tropical Tankah... Romantic, beachfront villa, located on privately owned,1/2 acre, Tankah, Mexico, a 1 hour drive south of Cancun airport, 3 miles north of the Tulum ruins, with other major archaeological sites within driving distance. Great views with barrier reef just offshore, and a cenote up the beach for diving, snorkeling or swimming, jungle style. Two guests quarters with kitchenettes, private patios, maid, gardener, manager. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve just south of Tankah and Tulum.

Weather http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/76590.html

Hidden Worlds snorkel & dive tours of cenotes
http://hiddenworlds.com.mx/

Xel-Ha
http://www.xelha.com.mx/

Aktun Chen
www.aktunchen.com

Maps of Riviera Maya Can-do Maps
http://WWW.cancunmap.com/

Check out this web site for tours lead by the Friends of Sian Ka'an group. Check out Cozumel.Very safe place, great
snorkelling. Try the Presidente, they have one of the best beaches on the island and the southern tip of paridise
reef is right there (as well as a sunken barge)
