I have been to PV 3 times and to the Riviera a dozen times for sure. In my eyes, it's a no brainer... that is if you want to walk endless miles of uninterupted white powdery beaches, swim in clear blue clean turquoise waters topped off by white capped waves. Ruins galore with newly discovered cities and temples still going on today. Mayan civilizations and Mayan culture that is alive and well in hundreds of villages that still speak the original language and follow the original culture. Spectacular natural wonders to behold such as cenotes, sinkholes, underground rivers, Caves of every size and shape, fresh water and salt water parks, mangroves and bird sanctuaries, Biosphere nature reserve, close proximity to Belize and Chiapas, Chichen Itza, one of the 7 wonders of the world, swim with either turtles or whale sharks both of which are in their natural environament. Almost all of these sites and experiences are to be found in the 3 states that make up the Yucatan Peninsula simply because of it's geographical location and subsurface rock (mostly limestone)that have been naturally carved for millions of years. I chose to omit restaurants, hotels, night life and all that city stuff that hundreds of Mexican destinations offer today and focus mostly on natural beauty, that is for the most part FREE. I am sure that PV holds it's own wonders and natural beauty, I guess that would be for you to decide and research.

Been to both.. much prefer the Riveria Maya.. even if its a lot further for us to travel to..
Clear water,, snorkeling with turtles.. jungles.. Mayan ruins..
I personally would avoid Cancun ,, and even Playa( although we do visit it each time for some shopping, but its just a city to me, and I personally am not a shopper) ..we like Akumal area much better..worth the hour drive south of Cancun airport. ( We use a private transfer even though we purchase package deals that include transfers, much nice way to arrive and surprisingly reasonable price!)
