Riviera Maya after Wilma
 

My husband and I have travel plans for mid-November in Playa del Carmen. Does anyone know if the region will be relatively back to normal by then? We'd hate to change our plans if it's not necessary.

From what have read on Google Cancun is gone right now, Don't think it will be up and running at least for 6 months I would cancel and go elsewhere.

Cancun, sadly, is a big mess. But I do think the city is working hard to quickly recover, and late spring to early summer may be a good time to think about vacationing there again.

Playa, from pics at Playa-Maya.com, looks pretty darn good. I'd go (depending on the resort/hotel) if the flights are available.

This area was crushed by Wilma. Noone there is going to tell you the truth about how bad it is. It will take MANY months to recover. cancel and go elsewhere

The pictures posted on the sites tell the truth. People are also there now reporting back what they are seeing.
The Riviera Maya was not hit nearly as hard as Cancun.

I don't know I was planning on going in March but I was afraid and was waiting to see what happens then I read on trip advisor.com that the Royal Hidwaway (which is where I was planning to go) has a lot of damage, they fired all the employees so now I will not go to that hotel just for that reason. The President of Mexico asked all the hotels to keep the Personnel because they really need their jobs and they could all help with the clean up but this hotel avoided his pleas. I would love to go to Playa but a different hotel, If I were you I would keep checking on various sites and see. It really doesn't look hopeful. Good Luck whatever you decide.

The longer this goes on, the longer it seems it will take this area to recover.
But I guess the Riu Palace close to the RH is pretty much ok, and that looked like a very nice place to me on my drive by last year...

Thanks Frankie Even after waiting for 3 yrs to go I would not after the way they treated their employees, Don't know where I am going but sure hope this area is up and running for the people who live there more than the people who want to travel there, but from what I have read on Google it's pretty bad. Let's wait and see My prayers are with them

I have many friends in Cancun that I keep in touch with almost daily. I understand that repairs are progressing rapidly. Try www.cancunassist.com/specialreports.cfm The site has photos and videos of many of the hotels, restaurants, beaches, etc., post-Wilma, and is updated every few days.

I just wanted to tell you that Riviera Maya is fine!!! we suffered some damages and were out of electricity for a while but everyone is working hard to fix everything, there are some resorts more damaged than others but you can see some photos I took on Oct, 26 right after Wilma at

Cancun was bad damaged by the Hurricane, but they are working hard to have everything fixed...I'm sure by the end of the year many resorts will be working 100%

I agree with you 100%, Claudia. As I mentioned in my previous post, I'm fortunate to have both Mexican and non-Mexican friends in the Cancun area. Yesterday I was told that several hotels and restaurants are already open for business -- not bad for only 3 weeks after a major hurricane. I also understand, from reading Novedades on line, that reps from many of the tour companies have been visiting Cancun and Riviera Maya and are suprised with the progress.
