Rivera Maya - is it worth a trip?
Does anyone know anything about Rivera Maya? Is it one of those silly destinations where you get bored the minute you arrive? Or can it turn into actually interesting long weekend getaway?
Looking for something authentic.. |
We really enjoyed Playa del Carmen. Lots to do, busy little beach community - not a high rise Cabo feel - but not a sleepy fishing village either. Would love to go back.

The Riviera Maya is south of Cancun. There is plenty to do. Bisit local towns, visit the ruins, snorkle in cenotes, zip lines, etc.

bachity,
it depends what you are looking for. we did not care for playa del carmen at all. but, we enjoyed the mayan riviera very much. there are lots of great places to snorkel in salt and fresh water(cenotes)... mayan ruins and great culture. you can stay in towns with lots of nightlife and shopping or head out to more remote area. we stayed in akumal. it is a relatively quiet town but still has restaurants and great snorkeling. |
Hard to say. Certainly Tulum and Akumal and all the various ancient ruins would keep the average Joe busy for a couple days.
I've never been bored ANYwhere in the world the minute I arrive, so maybe I'm not the best person to answer yours question. What do you mean by "authentic"? Certainly the Yucatan peninsula is a real place not a theme park. |
I love the Riviera Maya. Playa's a wonderful town, Tulum is incredibly beautiful -- there's just a ton to see and do, all topped off by the unbelievable beauty of the Carribbean. Of all the places I've traveled, it's the place I'd return to first.

It's a very long stretch of coast; ruins, cenote exploring, "eco" parks, towns, hardly a "silly destination."
|
No you should not go as it is just a silly boring place with nothing but very interesting Mayan ruins, beautiful water, great resorts, hotels, and dining, and truly friendly people. I think you should go to Disney World instead and visit the pavilions at Epcot where you can get a REAL experience, unlike the phony one you would find by visiting Mexico.
