river rafting from Arenal, Costa Rica

We are planing a trip to Coata Rica in June with three teenagers. We are interested in white water rafting from the Arenal area. It seems the closest rivers are El Toro River and Rio Balsa. We have never been rafting before and are a bit worried that the Toro looks to hard and the Balsa looks too easy. We would also consider the Sarapiqui if it is worth the extra drive time. We are looking into Desafío - would this be a good tour company? Is it necessary to book these in advance or is it ok to wait to see what the weather is and book it in Costa Rica? Thanks for any advice.

For about the same price I'd opt for the Pacuare rafting/x-fer option between San Jose and Arenal. Exploradores Outdoors offers this. The Pacuare is awesome.

If you don't have time to do the Pacuare, we did the Sarapiqui out of Arenal and really loved it. We used Rios Tropicales, and they were great. I'm sure Desafio would be good as well.

Thanks so much- That was what I was afraid of. The Pacuare looks amazing however I thought it might be too long from Arenal. Does anyone know how long of a drive it is to the Pacuare vs the Sarapiqui(I think this is 1 1/2 hr from arenal.) Do you think I need to make reservations now or can you wait until the day before the trip? I will look into the Exploradores and Rio Tropicales companies thanks.

We booked ours in advance just because if there aren't enough people signed up, they won't go out.
