Riu Palace Riviera Maya

Can someone give me a current update on the beach at the Riu Palace Riviera Maya.

I'm not sure where this hotel is, but we just got back from Playa del Carmen. The beaches in the northern half of the town are now very wide, however resorts in the Playacar end of town apparently are not too good, as the resorts there were busing guests up to the northern end of town for beach activities.

What does this mean? The beaches are still bad from the hurricane? We are considering staying in Playacar next month or maybe further south in Tulum. How are those beaches?

there's been a huge amount of erosion on the Playacar beaches since Wilma, and some Playacar hotels have no beach at all.

do you know which side it's on? I mean in relation to the Riu Yucatan. We stayed at the Riu Yucatan and the beach was great. I think it's always been fairly narrow but it's very nice.

The erosion in Playacar is not due to the hurricane. There have been several storms in the area in November and beach erosion has occurred in different areas. This can change on a daily basis so you really have no guarantee that the beach will be wide or not. The last I heard in January when I was there in town was that the beach at the RIU RM was pretty bad but you could go further down the beach near the RIU Mexico and the beach was fine. I stayed at the Yucatan in June and walked up to the Riviera Maya and the beach was fine. So it all depends upon the weather, etc.

The beaches in Tulum are wider than ever. Most of Playa del Carmen is fine, it's just Playacar that has some erosion.

So which AI in Playa del Carmen still have great beaches?? We have never been and trying to choose!

colokid Feb 11th, 2007 06:37 AM

You didn't say if you wanted adults only or not but the Royal Porto Playa Del Carmen which used to be the Royal Porto Real is very nice and is in PDC itself is a beautiful place with a good beach. Also, in Playacar the beach has been fine at the RIU Yucatan and south of there which would be Iberostar and Sandos. The beach was returning at Shangri La in PDC when I left at the beginning of Jan and that's also a nice place to stay with a partial AI.

Good info there from colokid. :-) Beaches have been changing this way and that many times since the hurricanes, just as they did before the hurricanes. In many places the hurricanes _helped_ the beaches, too. So it's not a hurricane question for the most part, at least, just one of beaches changing in unpredictable ways related to weather systems and mother nature in general.

So the trouble with the latter question is that it misses the possibility -- probability -- that the beach situation everywhere will change between now and your arrival. I mean, unless you're trying to book for a stay later this month or the middle of next month (which may be very difficult to do indeed, at this late date), you can bet good money that the beaches will be different then. Thus you may look now and see that resort X has a nice beach but resort Y doesn't, decide to book resort X for your stay, and arrive to find the situation has reversed itself and resort X is now lacking beach while it's nice and full at resort Y.

That's the way it goes, folks!

We are going to be at Sandos at the start of April. Any idea how that beach has been holding up?

We stayed at riu Palace Mexico a storm had hit 1 day before we got in we thought our beach was a mess thts until we saw the other hotels we attempted to walk the strech of beach between the riu yucatan and riu riveria maya palace not happening we has to cut through riu playacars hotel back to the street. The riu palace riviera's beach was small but adequete but the hotel and pool make up for it the riu palace mexico beach and the yucatan were the best but the best hotel with the rius was the riviera maya palace which you can use all of the other riu hotel amenities by the way the food was great enjoy
