Returning to Puerto Vallarta
 

Just booked 10 days late March at Los Cuatro Vientos, PV's second oldest hotel (10 rooms) with possibly the coldest, deepest pool in all of Mexico built for the original rather large owner way back in the 1950's.
It has been 9 years since I have been to PV so anxious to see old friends & make a few new ones after spending 7 weeks in Guanajuato. Will be flying over on Interjet (BJX to PVR for $56 US) on Interjet a most excellent airline. My grandson (10 YO) will be meeting me flying Southwest direct from Oakland for his first trip to PV.

Whoo-hooooooooo for you!! And VERY nice choice of hotel, don't forget the wonderful rooftop bar with the spectacular view of the city and Bay there.

First stayed at Los Cuatro Thanksgiving, 1986 staying at least once a year until "97. Returned in 2004 & 2007 but I have not been back since.

I predict you will be shocked about how much has changed in the last 9 years.

Welcome to Orange County...don't expect to find Mexico, just a lot of Gringos looking for 2/1 Margaritas and burgers..

Stewbear is well acquainted with Mexico and has a long standing love affair with Puerto Vallarta.

The irony here suze, is that stew seems to find some perverse pride in portraying himself as the anti-gringo, yet now he's vacationing in arguably the most gringo-fied destination in all of Mexico. Especially now that Canucks are officially counted as gringos.

Well mlgb as a guy who has traveled the length & breath of Mexico at least 40 times I know more than the average bear about Mexico.
FYI before coming this season to PV I will again be spending 7 weeks in Guanajuato a most marvelous mountain University town with fewer than 500 EXPATS (yes I indeed know what it means) in this city of about 120,000 citizens.

I do prefer a more Mexican feel for long term visits although I know or at least knew of areas in PV where gringos are in rare supply. In Reality I have many fond memories of PV along with many friends there, both Gringo & Mexican along with the fact that my 10 year old grandson(fluent in Spanish) can fly to meet me on Southwest directly from Oakland to Puerto Vallarta
I guess you still carry a bit of a grudge to my reaction to SM which perhaps I was less than clear about.
Much about SM is lovely with clean streets, great architecture & some excellent cafes. What I found less enjoyable is Sundays on the main plaza, lack of Mexican culture such as the necessity of importing the Orchestra from GTO along with The opera, Ballet etc The Sunday closing of museums & crowds.
Anyways not sure of how my returning visit to my first Mexican destination is controversial

PV, gringo's, surely you jest... !

The only thing proven by your continuing anti-Puerto Vallarta posts is that you have not spent time there to know what the city has to offer.

Anyone familiar with the area knows there is much more to it than cruise ship passengers, hotel zone resorts, and the tourist areas close to the beach.

Calling it "Fort Lauderdale" only shows lack of actual experience or else reflects a limited sense of adventure and experiences when visiting.

It is still on my "want to go there" list. Thanks all for the posts.

I don't understand the infighting about this. Mexico is a rich country culturally and it is really diverse in geography, many different types of experiences. I like the visit the areas that are less visited by gringos or that at least have a very old Mexico feel and/or preserved colonial nature too. And I like some more modern areas and areas with gringos too. I am a gringo, how can anyone fault people like yourself wanting to go to the same places.

I have followed Stewbear's posts for a long time. Maybe I am dense but I have never felt he is antigringo or exhibits some perverse pride in where he travels to in Mexico. He loves Guanajuato and returns there each year. And now he is going back to PV after a long absence. Good for him. He loves Mexico and obviously likes the immense diversity of experiences there, as a lot of us do.

Help this old fart out. Years ago I use to go to a spot South of PV where you could actually ride the river/stream over a waterfall landing in the pool below. There was a restaurant or two there also.
What is it's name Por Favor as my grandson would love this?
Now I am not talking about Yelpa as this is much closer to PV & just off the highway.
