Renting Car in Mexico

We are heading to Mexico in November, down to Chetamul near the Belize border & plan to rent a car. We rented from Fox last time there but they added extra insurance that wasn't necessary so don't want to use them again. My credit card will cover us for the CDW & know we need Mexican insurance. Has anyone had some good experience. I am aware that most all companies do a $1000 or so hold on your credit card. When I search there are lots of rentals at $1 a day but realize that doesn't involve any insurance.

I would not depend on your credit card's insurance. If you do get in an accident or have some other loss, you must pay it out of pocket before you leave Mexico and hash it out later with your card company. It's not worth the risk.

You credit card insurance is not valid in Mexico. You must buy full coverage. Do not use that. Pay the extra for full and it may triple your cost but it's what you need. I've been renting cars and selling them for 20 years. It's a necessity!

We often rent from America which we consider the best in the region. I am sure there are others but have not found them yet. Please follow the advice mentioned above for insurance purposes. You can always decline on road hasard and tire insurance but the rest is a must. Make sure there are 2 plates on your car and also do a thorough inspection before you take possession.
There is an America office in Cancun and one in PDC.
Please note, that if you intend to cross the border in Belize, to mention it to your car rental as they need to know for insurance, Belize is another country altogether with their own set of rules and regulations...

I have called my credit card company & they told me not to accept the rental companies CDW or they wouldn't help with any incidence. I'm very aware we need other insurance but have had problems in the past with companies making us take all their insurance. I've read through TripAdvisor not to get insurance through on line car agencies because it won't be accepted. Really was just looking for a reputable company so thank you Rohelio for mentioning America. I was also told Cancun car rental was good. We do not plan to drive over border to Belize. Last we were there they wouldn't allow that.

Cancun Car Rental and America Car Rental are the same company. They do business under abput 8 different names, they are all the same company.

America and Easyway are both fine, all the necessary insurances are either included or very reasonable. The cars are not quite as new as the major chains, but they are not bad.

Your credit card insurance will not be accepted. Been selling rental cars for 20 years and you will have to pay upfront. Bad advice from your cc company.
All the luck to you if you don't take it.

Your credit card will only reimburse you for any damage to the rental car. If you damage a car (we loosened a bumper once driving back from Xcalak and hit a pothole) you have to pay for the damage and then submit the paperwork to your cc company when you return.
I take all the insurance, and also recommend EasyWay and America.

Hi, just wanted to let everyone know my recent bad experience with AVANT car rental in Cancun Mexico. I took out full insurance package after reading many warnings about trouble w/ car rental agencies in Mexico. About an hour after leaving Cancun, driving on toll road to Merida, I got a flat tire-completely shredded. I called and was told to drive to Merida and find place to repair. No help finding where to go. Firestone in Merida couldn't repair the large tear, so I had to purchase a new tire as car only had a temporary spare. The company is refusing to reimburse me for the tire! Now I will fight thru credit card company. DO NOT use these crooks. Nataly
