renting a car
 

I am going on my honeymoon to Costa Rica and was interested in drivng a rental car from San Jose to Tabacon Resort. Is this possible with it being my first time in Costa Rica? Any assistance with this would be greatly appreciated.

Jim, it is possible, a lot of people do it. The roads from San Jose to Tabacon are in decent shape (but narrow and winding in places). The signs are not that great, but we found generally that if you follow the signs posted by various hotels you'll be fine. If you know some basic Spanish that will come in handy as well in case you have to ask for directions.<BR>Just make sure you allow enough time and don't drive after dark (6pm). The drive from San Jose to Tabacon will be 3-4 hours.

Thank you so much Iza. We have heard various things about traveling and the roads in Costa Rica. Our choices, as of now, are renting a car and driving from San Jose to Tabacon, then to Manuel Antonio or using hotel and city transportation to get to these destinations. If we use city transportation our luggage will be with us. Any other information or suggestions you have for us would be greatly appreciated. Between us we know a LITTLE Spanish.

Are there rental cars in Quepos? How long is the drive to Jaco and what is the condition of the road?

We just returned from CR where we rented a car and drove 1000 kilometers in a week. The drive from San Jose to Tabacon is not bad but be prepared for bad roads (gravel and potholes) and try and get a good road map of Costa Rica before you go. We made many wrong turns and the road signs are practically non existent. However, we relied on common sense and maintained a sense of humor. Also, we wished that we had brought a small compass with us to give us some feeling of security that we were at least heading in the right direction. We also found that after driving for a couple of days we got the feel for the roads and the system. <BR><BR>Good luck.
