Rent a car or hire driver?

We are staying at Finca Rosa Blanca for a few days in September. We would like to do some day trips exploring the country a bit. Would we do better hiring a driver, or renting a car? Is one appreciably more expensive than the other?

Do a search on this forum regarding your question. This is a very hot topic. Soem people(like me)like the freedom of a car. Others dont want to deal with driving in CR which at times can be stressful.

koa is right and wrong because there is no correct answer .

I went to Costa Rica for nine days last November and toured the whole Central Valley..I have a private tour guide everyday and for ME, it wokred out great.
No driving , no getting lost, no worry about the car while I was out site seeing.

When you are one on one with a private guide everyday, you really get to see a lot, and you have questions answered and explained on the spot.!!

But again, if you want to drive, then there is nothing wrong in doing that.

Hmmm, not much help with posting is it .!

If you are only staying for a few days, go with the hired driver. For a week or more, and if you are switching locations, for sure rent the car, you will appreciate the freedom it gives.
Good luck and have fun!

How do you hire a driver, can you ask at the hotel. Is this the same as a taxi?

Check out costa rica transfers.com. I did not use them because I decided to rent a car. But they have good reviews and when I was inquiring online, they were very prompt in responding. (Not always common in CR)

I agree with checking on Costa Rica transfers. They have been excellent in helping me plan my trip transfers. Sometimes I get immediate responses to my e-mails. And you can negotiate the rate if you pay by check instead of credit card.
