Recent recommendations for Isla Holbox?

We're visiting Holbox in a few weeks (3/22-3/28) to celebrate a big birthday, and feel pretty confident in our online research and planning. But we're wondering if any Fodorites have been to Holbox recently and can offer any tips. Here are our plans, as well as a few questions for the community.

We're flying to Cancun and have pre-purchased a shuttle to Chiquila, where we'll catch the ferry to Holbox. We're staying at a new beachfront property, Casa Cat Ba. We're aiming for a very relaxing time, so have made few plans beyond visiting the animal shelter and walking some dogs on the beach, possibly walking the mile in knee-deep water to spot flamingoes, maybe take a tour, renting bikes or a golf cart to explore, and eating as much fresh seafood (and lobster pizza) as we can.

Does anyone have suggestions on what to bring along for comfort/protection? We've read that mosquitoes or no-seeums can be bothersome and that the locals use baby oil to protect themselves. How's the water? We'll also travel with some pesos as we hear there is only one ATM on the island. We don't mind unplugging so the "spotty reception" doesn't bother us.

Any other tips? Thanks in advance.

The plan you have is perfect, just that it is important to mention that:

I recommend you to keep both the currency of your country, as well as having Mexican pesos, since as the Island is quite small. the taxis, the rents, are quite cheap, too, I recommend you to bring pretty comfortable clothes, since the best of the island is, walk and spend a sunny day.

Mexican pesos is all you need in Holbox, they also take credit cards depending on which hotel you stay. The sunsets are quite beautiful and the laid back attitude is catching. Renting a bike is popular as all the roads are dirt. A visit to the cemetery will be colorful and interesting. Restaurants seem to appear out of nowhere at night as they are closed during the day and pack away tables and chairs out of sight.

Thank you both for your help. We're coming to the end of our Holbox trip and I've learned a lot. I'll post a report within the next week if people are interested.

Yes, please post a trip report. I've not been there in 10 years. Curious to hear how things are these days.
