I would contact the place you're staying in MA, the road between Quepos and MA may be an issue -- http://www.ticotimes.net/News/Daily-...vember-05-2010

I think that if you really think about it, octalon7, you would choose another area. If you can get through, it will be marginal and you will be mixed with traffic of rescue and repair vehicles and Red Cross. Do you really want to put more pressure on an area that is already reeling? Who knows what conditions will exist at your hotel or in the area. In a few days or week at most, everything should be back to normal but I would just arrange your vacation plans to visit somewhere where you can actually have a vacation.

I rented a house, non-refundable, so it isn't that easy/economical to just abandon the plan to go there unfortunately...unless we have no choice. Of which I guess we will have to find a new destination if there is no possibility to get there.

Octalon7: Sounds like you are in a bind. Can you contact the people you rented from and discuss the possibility of a refund or even partial refund under the circumstances? You might also check to see if your travel insurance would cover this loss. Of course, you have thought of these things, I am sure. Not a very good place to be, for sure.

According to your earlier post, you will be in Arenal until Wednesday and at that point, things should be much better. Keep checking that transito.go.cr site. Here are a few words that will help you understand better: frente - front; cierra or cerrado- closed; carril - lane; paso regulado - normal passage; derrumbe - landslide; no hay paso - can't go there. Trying to translate the page won't work well, I think (as you have discovered) so you might just try translating any word that you don't understand.

Thank you! That helps quite a bit.

We risked it by not buying insurance and unfortunately the rental agreement specifically states no refunds due to weather and road closures.

If not, maybe Tamarindo will be a good alternative?

Time to get on my flight!

Here are some pics from the MA damage, most seems to be around Mimo's. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?ai...00001744217213

You can get to Manuel Antonio with a detour as of right now. I came this afternoon via Dominical, and it is also open from the north ie Parrita.

Be sure to get detailed instructions and ask the rental if their driveway is passable. It is a big pain in the butt to get between Quepos and MA but it can be done. A 4wd is a good idea.

Thought I would report back in that our trip was a success, no issues. The old dirt road between Quepos and MA was open and all the rest of the roads along the route as well. I've heard the main road has been repaired and operational again this week.

Beautiful country, had such a blast. Can't wait to go back! Loved all of the places we stayed (Arenal Nayara, rental house in Manuel Antonio, and the Alta Hotel in Santa Ana)
