Quick trip to Monterrey, where to stay?
A friend and I are thinking of a quick weekend trip to Monterrey. Since it is a big city, where would be the best location for us to stay and be near the tourists sites?
We're budget travelers, won't have a car, would like to pay $50 or less for a hotel (just needs to be clean, safe, good location). Anyone have any advice? Thanks in advance, Sandy (in Denton) |
Sorry . . . forgot to put "Mexico" in the title (just saw the reminder post).

Try the hotels in the 'Centro' area. They usually have very reasonable rates on weekends. The 'Hotel Monterrey' (I think it is a Best Western, faces the Macroplaza, and the Fiesta Americana Centro is around a nice, little garden.

Forgot to say, if you don't have a car, then DEFINITELY stay in the 'Centro' area. You'll find enough around to keep you busy during a weekend. The Macroplaza is a huge public space with lots to see, like the Modern Art Museum (Marco) or the Museum of Mexican History. You can also visit City Hall on one end of the plaza and the 'Palacio de Gobierno' (the seat of the state's government) on the other.
As for food and enterntainment, the Barrio Antiguo has a lot of both, especially on weekends. |
Eat regional specialty, "cabrito."

I realized this is an old thread, but in case anybody refers to it still-- I just returned from Monterrey where I stayed at the Holiday Inn Centro. Wonderful hotel, great staff, great restaurant, oyutstanding security, free parking, a Thrifty rental car base in case you want to take a day trip. Definitely great value. Strongly recommend this hotel. It has an exit to a pedestrian street Morelos with great shopping (shoes) and straight shoot to the Macro Plaza.
