PVR, Trop Room Location or Condo?
I am looking at booking a room for December. Does anyone have a preference on room locations at the Tropicana? I don't care if it's a standard room, but don't want an economy as I want a balcony and a king bed. Also, the Escondido condos are much cheaper at only $40/nt for a one bedroom with a king. Is this going to be a pain for walking back and forth? They are both available and I'm only there for 4 nights. I like PDR, but they want $63 for the room I had this year for $48, so don't want to pay that much. Thanks for any advice.
|
I've stayed at el Escondido 3 times and love the building. Yes it is up at the tip-top of the hill so there's a bit more walking involved each day than from a place like Roger's. For me, it's worth it. It's is an excellent place to stay.
Are you going to be solo this trip? What units at Escondido are available? Will they rent for just 4 nights? |
ps - $40/night at El Escondido sounds really (really) low for the place. I'm surprised you are finding that price in December. Even in off-season I've given more like ~$50-60/a night there.
|
Yes, Escondido 3 with pvrpv for 4 nights. It's available, just concerned about getting back at night sola. The $40 US is much cheaper than the $63US for PDR for the room I want (217) plus $5US for the fridge, so $68US vs. $40US. Pretty good deal. I am also looking at the Trop, but this deal seems super cheap. Just wondering if it's worth it for 4 nights or to bit the bullet and pay the extra for Trop or PDR. Thanks:)
|
PS: The Escondido 3 is listed at $40 for the whole year with pvrpv. not just the off season. Should I jump on it?
|
Hmmm, when I look today, it says minimum of 365 nights. It didn't say that yesterday. I guess it was too good to be true. Now back to either the PDR or the Trop. I wonder what the Yasmin is like. I know it doesn't have a pool, but it is a good location. Maybe I'll look there HAs anyone stayed there?
|
Yasmin is $47.50 CAD (36USD) per night including tax. I know their "pool" isn't much but I would probably just be at the beach or other properties on inspections anyway. HAve you stayed there?
|
OK that price makes sense for a one year rental, but not for a short stay.
I didn't realize that PVRPV had listings at Escondido? I thought Vallarta Getaways was the management company there. For future reference, there is zero problem "getting back at night sola" for el Escondido, other than climbing the hill. *** You do NOT want to stay at Yasmine anya time soon because there is a HUGE new condo building under construction going up smack-dab next door!! (in the old Nacho Daddy's space). I would never stay at Yasmine myself because I much much prefer Posada de Roger. |
Are you going over Christmas-time? I ask only because I'm seeing single rooms at Roger's thru 12/16 for $47/night on their website.
What's the price at The Tropicana? You do know it's a beach-front hotel, right? |
Oh yes, I've been to PV more than 20 times, so am aware. The Pacifica was going up when I was at PDR last. I do not mind noise at all and sleep with the AC and TV on. Noise is not an issue for me at all. I do prefer the PDR, but that was for the beginning of Dec. she quoted. They said they now add $10 US per night for a balcony room which 217 is. I really enjoyed sitting there at night or even in the morning watching the happenings. She said $53 US plus the 10 plus the 5 for the fridge which makes it $68. I see she may have been quoting me double though, but it would still be $$62US then. I will double check. The Trop is $80 CAD, or about $60US. I guess that's pretty good and that is a room with the balcony and a king bed. Hmmm. Decisions.lol.
|
I can get the PDR much cheaper if I book via a tour operator I deal with, but then I can't request a room and guess I won't get the one I want if I dont' book directly.
|
I just got a message from PVRPV and they only manage that one condo and it is 12 month rental. She said she would not walk back at night there, to always take a cab if solo. I never did last time, but I was at PDR, so obviously busy street. This is only my 3rd trip alone.
|
Well those prices don't match their website. Was it direct with the hotel's office that said about the extra charge for the balcony? I've only ever heard of that when people were booking thru a 2nd party.
Regardless... if Roger's is really $68 and the Trop is $60.. this would be a no-brainer for me. I'm not talking about Pacifica, that building is already up plus it is 3 blocks away from Roger's. The new construction is literally right AT Yasmine. But since "noise is not an issue" for you "at all" go for it. Actually ask for a discount because most people will not want to stay there at this time!! |
<She said she would not walk back at night there, to always take a cab if solo.>
I'm not sure why she would say that. Just being an overly cautious property manager I guess. Because I've stayed at Escondido 3x (and would return in a heart beat) and walked home alone every night. I do use a flash light but only so I don't trip on the uneven steps and cobblestones. I also stay at Selva Romantica the last 2x in that very same area, and walk home every night well after dark. I'm not sure what you or she are afraid of? |
I just want to make sure that late at night in the dark, it would be OK to walk if I'm coming home from somewhere after a few beverage:) It's right on the PDR website, I see at the bottom it does say $10US extra for a balcony room. I think she was charging me $53 for a double, not the $47 for a single, but that is still $63 w/balcony and a fridge. Booking the Trop at $60 would be via a 3rd party (one of my Canadian tour operators, but that would be for a room w/balcony and I can only request a king, not guarantee). I guess I will probably take the Trop at those rates. I did send an email to Dario at the PDR to confirm the rate for a single of $63 w/balcony and fridge.
|
Sorry, right, not the Pacifica, the one that is going right above where Nacho Daddy's used to be.
|
<late at night in the dark, it would be OK to walk if I'm coming home from somewhere after a few beverage>
Well I'm sure not walking home sober ;-) If you're too tipsy to walk then a taxi is a fine idea, but I do not believe it is necessary for personal safety. That's a very nice residential neighborhood, upscale condos, apartments, homes. AS far as PdR, since you aren't there at Christmas and you are a return guest I would ask Dario if they would give you both the balcony and the frig for no extra charge. |
<Sorry, right, not the Pacifica, the one that is going right above where Nacho Daddy's used to be.>
Just saying... the noise from Posada Roger wouldn't be anything much since it's 2+ blocks away from the construction. But Yasmine is practically underneath it! |
I could actually do the Las Palmas with AI for $41US/night, but I don't think I want to be all the way down there this trip. WIth only 4 nights, I don't want to waste a lot of time using the busses back and forth since the site inspections I am doing will be south for this trip. Might do a Secrets inspection, but that will be the only one in the hotel zone on this trip
|
<that late at night in the dark>
OK OK if it's after midnight and you've been drinking... take a cab. |
LOL:)
|
Sorry (as you know) I don't know anything about the Hotel Zone or AI properties.
|
Thank you. I will email them again and ask if they will do that for me. When I was there about the same time last year, it's not like they were full then.
|
<it's not like they were full then>
OR you could do the cheaper 3rd party rent & then throw yourself on the mercy of the front desk for a nicer room upon arrival (if you would settle for a non-balcony room). |
All that said... I would go with The Trop unless something dramatically changes in the pricing you've described above. For the same/similar price the beachfront and pool set up at The Trop is a whole lot nicer than PdR will ever be (love 'em as I do).
|
I think so too. Now to just get good air:) For a short trip I want the non stop flights and don't want to pay more than $500 CAD. Very excited to try some new restaurants I didn't get to last year. Places I know my kids wouldn't like so we dont' try them when the kids are there. Can't wait to go back to Coco's Kitchen though. So far, my best breakfast place in PV. Would like to try Roberto's now that they opened up again as well. IT was the first place I ate at in PV 20 years ago and still remember it as being one of my best meals.

Buena suerte!

Well, the PDR agreed to waive the fridge fee but keep the balcony fee, so it will be $57US per night. With the current rates today, the Trop in a standard room with balcony and king directly with the hotel is $57US w/o breakfast and $63 US w/breakfast via my tour operator so balcony guaranteed, but king on request.
The Las Palmas AI is $43US and the Sunscape in a king ocean view room AI is $76US. Also, free calls to Canada ,but that isn't a big deal since I use majic jack and that is free anyway with wifi which is readily available. Althought I'm reading it's not as good as it used to be with the new company. I would like to be on the SS this trip, but it seems crazy to pass up the cheap AI's, even for breakfast, mini fridges filled with beer daily for free, etc. Just have to bite the bullet and decide. Decisions decisions:) |
But you wanted to stay in a hotel or condo in Zona Romantica? I thought that was the entire point of this thread.
If you want to go with a cheap All Inclusive in the Hotel Zone, you know way more about that than I do. |
I know, but hard to pass up such a good deal. Will just mean that I will be bussing it south to see the hotels on my list. I'm leaning to the trop or SS. Seems crazy to spend more to stay in a lesser property, but I don't want to travel. Those are my issues right now. Like I said, I just have to decide and stick to it.
|
<seems crazy to spend more to stay in a lesser property>
Hopefully you'll post how this turns out. You couldn't pay me to stay at a hotel zone resort AI ;-) |
