Punta D'Este, Carmela Uruguay, or Buzios, Brazil
My husband and I are going on a 16 days trip to South America in March 2005. It will include 4 days in Rio (JW MARRIOT), 4 days in Santiago (Ritz Carlton), 4 days in Mendoza (HYATT), 4 days in Buenos Aires (FOUR SEASONS) and then ? We would like to conclude our trip with some R&R. We will leave Buenos Aires the morning of 13th or 14th and we will be taking a night flight out of Rio back to NYC on the 17th. Our possibilities include (but we are still open for suggestions) Four Seasons in Carmela, Conrad in Punta D'Eleste and Casas Brancas in Buzios. We are in our late 20's(with no kids) enjoy a night life, desire to satisfy our palettes with incredible food and wines, and a place to just relax by the pool or beach. We would like to keep our cost per night US$400. Based on the above factors and itinerary, what would you recomend? Many thanks.

Casas Brancas yes or better yet in Buzios Colanna Park right on Sao Fernandez beach. One of the best beaches in Buzios, 10 minute walk to downtown or 1 min by taxi. The restaurants in Buzios that are good are Satyricon and Brigitas restaurant which is part of the guest house, check it out. Buzios has good night life too if you want it, great happy hour in town. Around happy hour time everybody leaves the beaches and the streets are filled with people doing happy hour in the open air bars, its great and at night many clubs with music and dancing.

We're heading to BA and Brazil in three weeks but the one factor that jumps out to me is that you're staying in alot of excellent but large American chain hotels.
The advantage of picking somewhere in Buzios is that's you may get more of a smaller place with more local flavor.
