Punta Arenas - taxis at pier?

We will have one day in Punta Arenas from 8:00 to 8:00 but I just heard from the ferry company that they only operate on T, TH, and Sat and of course we get there on a Monday.

Sigh. We were hoping for the Magdelena Ferry but since that's out, we'll go for the Otway Penguin visit. We want to do more than just got out there in a crowded bus and back and pay a huge sum to the cruiselines for that pleasure.

So we're hoping to catch a cab at the pier and go out there to see the penguins and then have a couple of hours to see some other things - since we have about 10 hours to play with.

Has anyone been there? Are there taxis available at the pier or do we have to hunt one down?

Any suggestions appreciated, as usual!

Hi - we were in Punta Arenas in February of this year - coming off a cruise from Ushuaia arriving Saturday morning (so this may not help you) - there were a few cabs at the pier but "town" is right there and we saw several cabs in the main square (a few block walk) so I don't think you'll have a problem.

If you are looking for a restaurant while you're there - we had a wonderful meal at La Luna - here's a link to our blog - if you scroll down you'll see some pix of the wonderful Chupe (and other things) we had there

Taxis seem to appear whenever tourists do in Chile. Anyone wanting one during our package tour anywhere had no problem. We only got as far south as the Glacier San Rafael though. We did not go to Punta Arenas.

The taxis do seem to know the exact schedule of all the cruise ships.

Be prepared for cold rainy wet weather because, even in summer, you will have cold rainy wet weather.

I don't know if the times work for you however this company runs daily tours by zodiac to Magdalena.

THanks for the replies. Liz, you put my mind to ease about the taxis.
FSM, cold, rainy, wet weather! YUK!
Jafa, great link - a zodiak would be perfect. I will check that out.

Please note that you need to reverse your perspective in Chile. Going South means you are going towards Antarctica. If you turn the map upside down, you will get the idea.

The South of Chile is wet and cold even in summer because it is, well, so far SOUTH.
