Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui area - recommended accommodations / activities?

We ‘d like to spend a few days near Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui this fall to explore the La Selva Biological Station & Trimbina Rainforest areas.

We would like feedback on recommended accommodations in that area. We’ve narrowed it down to a few choices –

Hotel Gavilan Rio Sarapiqui
La Quinta de Sarapiqui Country Inn
Ranch Leona

Other suggestions?

Since we hope to avoid renting a car, we’d like a place that could help with transportation from the airport and is accessible to hiking / birding locations in the area.

Any other recommendations for spending about three days there are also appreciated!

Thanks, ejones

Hotel Gavilan is [or was when we visited] quite basic.Birding can be great. La Quinta is nice, food is good and there is decent birding on the grounds. La Selva has cabins of varying levels. We've been on the grounds multiple times but have not stayed there. Birding and wildlife observation is very good. Some of the forest is spectacular.Food is healthy but institutional - it is a working research station. Another nearby option is Selva Verde Lodge. It is pretty much a birders / nature lodge. Food is decent and bird and wildlife viewing on the grounds can be very good.

You can stay at Tirimbina or La Selva--both have lodging and eating facilities.

We had a great time at Selva Verde--which is about halfway in between Tirimbina and La Selva.

I haven't been but did you see the recent trip report about staying at Tirimbina? http://www.fodors.com/community/mexi...-saripiqui.cfm

Ditto RAC - we love Selva Verde, have stayed there twice and have taken both birding and natural history tours at La Selva.

The grounds at Selva Verde offer toucans, frogs, howlers, sloths, tanagers, honeycreepers, iguanas.

We took the chocolate tour at Tirimbina, very informative.
