Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui
 

Hi! I am planning a trip to Costa Rica and have some questions.
1) I am planning to drive from Manuel Antonio to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (the beach area) in one day. Is this pushing it?
2) What is the best route to travel from MA to PV?
3) From Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, I am traveling north up to Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui. I know this place is less traveled to. Is it worth it to go? I have been to Costa Rica once before and did MA, Arenol and Poas, so was hoping to try some different spots. Sarapiqui sounded like a good adventure spot, but I would like to hear from someone who has actually been there. Any thoughts?

You could drive MA to PV de Talamanca in one day, but it will be a long day! Start early and take a few breaks. 8 hours drive time should do it, but it will stretch close to 9, I'll bet, by the time you actually arrive.

You'll need a good map, go through Orotina and the mountains back to the Interamerican Highway, then into San Jose. You'll have to navigate a little in the city (study that map!) and probably ask directions a bit (one way streets, no street signs except on the corners of a very few buidlings).

Puerto Viejo de sarapiqui is one of our favorite areas. Try to tour La Selva Biological Station while you are there (with a guide). It's just a short distance out of PV and to your south). La Selva is operated by the Organization for Tropical Studies and would be well worth your time. We also have enjoyed going down to the river and taking a leisurely jungle cruise--fairly decent wildlife viewing. About $25 for an hour.

Be sure to plan so that you are off the road before 6:00pm when it gets dark!

We visited the Sarapiqui region earlier this year, and very much enjoyed it. We stayed three nights at La Quinta Sarapiqui Country Inn outside Puerto Viejo, and I certainly would recommend it. As well as the guided tours at La Selva Biological Station, we also took a walking tour at the Tirimbina Rainforest Center which was quite interesting. I did a morning of white water rafting on the Sarapiqui which was great fun.

The Selva Verde Lodge on the Sarapiqui River, close to LaQuinta, is a bit more upscale alternative. Either is preferable to staying in Puerto Viejo itself.
