I have been to Cancun 7 times in as many years...and love it. Yes, there are malls, clubs etc. But there is no mistaking you are in another country as soon as you get off that plane.
The beaches are beautiful, aqua blue water that is warm like bath water and clean white sand. I have never been on the pacific side so I can only go by what I've heard and read.
I have never been bored, there are so many things to do, go downtown Cancun off the island, take a ferry to La isla de Mujeres..the island of women and rent golf carts, or mopeds and tour the island on your own.
Then there are the ruins.. There are even ruins on Cancun it self. They are the ruins El Rey..right past The Hilton (formally Cesares) They had found the remains of a king, and he subjects. It's very interesting.
A vacation is a personal choice, and it's all of what you make it. People ask us why do we return time and time again to Cancun..we tell them go once and you will know. Which ever destination you decide on, make it the best vacation ever....

CANCUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been to both places and would never go back to Puerto Vallarta and have heard the same from others I know who went. The water is dark and dirty, the beach is not nice. The vendors selling things on the beach were incessant and annoying. A bunch of local girls tried to mug us one nite coming out of carlos n charlies.
Yes it's less commercialized then cancun, but it was not enjoyable. With cancun you can easily take side trips as we did and see real mexico. And you DO know you're in mexico even in cancun by the food, the locals, the language, etc. I've been to cancun 4 times and would go back again..I would never go back to PV.
by the way, if you want less commercialized but want the caribbean coast, try Playa del Carmen..we're going this October. It's only 30 minutes south of cancun and a ferry ride to cozumel with great snorkeling..
Hope this helps!!
