Puerto Vallarta - sand fleas?
 

I am going to PV in less than a week. I have read info from 3 different people that said there was a major sand flea problem on all the beaches (these were "not real recent" comments on ePinions.com) Supposedly you don't notice being bit, but then there are extremely itchy welts that don't go away for a week - a month. Is it really this bad? What insect repellent is best? I would especially appreciate replies from people who live there or have been there recently. Thanks.

Was there last November and on the beach at Mismaloya and beach behind Intercontinental (strongly recommend - get access through the condo block next door to Intercon, no hawkers at all and very clean beach), had no sand flea problems at all.

I have spent literally months total at Playa Los Muertos (the main local beach southside PV) and have never seen or heard of sand fleas there.

We spend every summer in PV and my husband always complains that sand fleas are biting him. Our daughters and I have never been bothered, and, actually, we've never seen the bites on my husband. I think it's his imagination.
