Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas
My husband and I are planning a trip to either Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas in mid January 2006. Which would you recommend? We are very interested in nice resorts with great beaches and some things to do during the day and at night. Any help you can offer would be great. Also, which resorts would you most recommend? Thanks.

In my opinion i whould choose Puerto Vallarta. I liked Cabo but it felt like i was in some city in the U.S. Puerto Vallarta is charming an feels old world. There are plenty of fabulous resorts in Puerto Vallarta and endless activitys to do. My favorite is the Canopy Tour where you are on zip lines swinging from tree to tree.Plenty to do at night as well as many wonderful restaurants. Good luck with your choice!!

Puerto Vallarta is a favorite place of mine. I love the city and the setting on the Bay of Banderas, on the bay with mountains and jungles surrounding. It's a wonderful mix of tourist ammenities but has retained its local flavor. All kinds of day and night activities available.
Cabo is situated at the end of a desert peninsula and more specifically built up for tourism. I think it has all you are looking for as well, but more specific to a resort vacation that you could find anywhere. |
I like Puerto Vallarta better too. It has a lot more personality!
But Cabo really seems to have the best luxury resorts, if that's what you're looking for...although most beaches aren't swimmable in Cabo ... and there is good nightlife in Cabo, as well as Puerto Vallarta. To me, Puerto Vallarta is just much prettier than Cabo -- lush and tropical. Cabo is a desert environment, as Suze said. |
I agree also that Cabo probably has more and better high-end luxury resorts. That's more what Cabo's all about (and golf, deep sea fishing). People go to PV for other reasons mostly.

Greetings: Definitely Puerto Vallarta in January. Stay in Old town (southern zone - zona romantica) on Los Muertos Beach, preferably a condo on the beach. Way more things to do in Puerto Vallarta without having to take a taxi everywhere-- if you stay in old town. January is high season in PV. Rates may be a little higher, but worth it. If you choose Cabo, the El Presidente is quite nice. But in PV, I urge you not to stay at the fancy hotels (Nueva Vallarta, and Marina Vallarta) because you are away from the hustle and bustle of the real PV. The night life is alive on the Malecon and in old town. From Hotel Los Arcos on the beach you can walk along the ocean, over the Malecon extension bridge to the Malecon where there are things to see night and day in January. We are going to Cabo in April, but only because we want to sit around and read and do nothing. (Also we belong to "the Club" at El Presidente. We have a Condo (Plaza Dorada) in PV so it definitely is my favorite place. The greatest beaches are in Cozumel (El Presidente is fabulous) or Tulum. If you choose PV in January--meet us for dinner at Brazil and come with a BIG appetite.
