Puerto Vallarta

Help! We will be honeymooning in Puerto Vallarta from March 31 through April 4, 1998. Any suggestions on what to see and where to eat. We would like to experience Mexico, not just American hotels. Also, have any of you gone to the Bull Fights? Worth it or not? Thanks for any help you can give us.

My husband and I are going to Puerto Vallarta next week. I have found tons of information on the net. Just go through the net looking for Puerto Vallarta, especially the message boards, lots of good advice. Also lots of info on things to do and places to see. I'll post some recommendations when we return.

Eileen,
We have been visiting Puerto Vallarta for more than 10 years and LOVE it. We own Timesharing there, a small place on the south side of town. The charm of PV is in the old town itself which is full of life and fascination. This is the real Mexico. There are hundreds of restaurants, too. One of my favorites and the least expensive but really excellent food is Cafe de Olla, in the heart of town. No reservations and always busy but worth a little wait.

About a mile north of the old town is the start of what I call the "Miami Strip". This is where all of the major hotels are located going as far north as the airport and then out towards Nuevo Vallarta (this is a new development - lots of modern hotels and timeshares). We avoid it like a plague!

Travel locally by bus. They are very cheap. Go to Mismaloya- about 8 miles south. They filmed "Night of the Iguana" there. The remains of the old movie set can still be seen. Mismaloya Bay is beautiful.

Wander the old town by night, too. The streets of Puerto Vallarta are very safe and it's fascinating. If you have any specific question in mind, please e-mail me back. I'll try and answer it. We will be arriving in PV ourselves on April 4th for 2 weeks.

And, finally, congratulations. We wish you a long and happy married life. Have fun! Regards...

Eileen,
Re bull-fights. I forgot to include an answer to this one. Bullfighting in Mexico is not a bit like Spain where it is nothing more than a cruel, blood "sport". The bull has no chance..It always gets murdered after a bloody, painful teasing experience. That is not MY idea of fun.

In Mexico, it is sometimes a laugh, but always exciting. It's more of a tussle between the matador and the bull and the bull sometimes wins! The bull is never killed. It's not for me, either, but it's not the cruelty of the Spanish way.

George Quigley.

I returned from PV yesterday, and have already answered several questions at this site regarding PV so will not bore you and others with repetition. Check some of the other places where people asked questions on PV, and feel free to email me with specific questions. Ditto to George's comment on Cafe de Olla, it is every bit as good as everyone says it is. When I told our waiter that I heard about them on the internet, he was flabbergasted and then insisted that we accept free shots of tequila. Our experience in PV was warm and friendly people, hardworking and considerate. We will go back again.

Hi,
My husband and I just returned from Puerto Vallarta, March 13-20. Must do places . . .

Wild ATV Tours, Santa Maria "Booze Cruise", Rancho Indio, No Name Cafe, Restaurante Romano, Roxy's, only bay fishing - no big game, and most interesting was the Tequila Factory Tour.
