Puerta Vallarta hotel- Sheraton vs Westin??

My husband and I have reservations at the Sheraton, but after reading negative reviews of the beach (rocky, and lots of aggressive venders, along with pushy time-share hawkers in the reception area) we are thinking of switching to the Westin. Is there any downside of staying in the marina area? I have stayed at the Sheraton about 12 years ago, but never at the Westin, so any thoughts would be appreciated.

I haven't been to either hotel, but I stayed recently at LaJolla de Mismaloya and loved it. It's south of town and in a less developed area, which is either a plus or minus depending on your point of view. The advantage is it's quieter, not as developed, so you won't see Wal-Mart or McDonald's there. The disadvantage is you can't walk into town and to other restaurants. The bus, which stops in front of the hotel, only run 'til about 11 and it's about a $15-$20 cab ride to the hotel.

The Marina is an upscale district. It's about a 20 mins. taxi ride into downtown Puerto Vallarta. So to my mind the "disadvantage" is you're limited to the shops and restaurant in the Marina, or you have to take a taxi (or bus ride) to get into town. That said, this may or may not be important to you.

I've only seen the Westin on the Travel Channel, but it made the list of 10 best beach resorts in Mexico (which surprised me quite honestly, but they sure made it look great). I have stayed at Casa Magna Marriott nearby one time. Again nice place, but for me I prefer to be an easy walking distance to town.

thanks for both of the replies. I agree that it is nice to walk to town, so we are leaning towards the Sheraton, but if the Westin is a top hotel in Mexico we might consider changing!
