Progreso in the Yucatan

Has anyone ever stayed or visited Progreso? We love the Yucatan, but not Cancun. And Isla Mujeres has gotten a little too popular for us. We thought about Holbox but that is a little too rustic. We've heard so much about Progreso. We would fly to Cancun, rent a car and drive to Progreso.
Would love to get information from anyone who has been there. Please email direct at [email protected]
Thanks so much

Although I have never been to Progreso, I know someone who has. My understanding is that it's a nice little town, but not much to do or many nice places to stay. If you don't care about being right on the beach, you may want to look into Merida. It's a beautiful city with lots going on and it's about a 30 mins. drive to Progreso.

I've been to Progresso. It's a bit like a beach resort which has had its day. Sentiments are similar to the thread above. Beware the 8 mile pier appears to havesome kind of factory at the end and I don't know what it does (perhaps leak chemicals?). Progreso would appear a haven for bird watchers as there are a number of reserves on migration paths around here - but I never went watching so can't really say.

My image of Progreso is that it is more or less what everyone says Playa del Carmen used to be and what Puerto Morelos still seems to be: a sleepy little fishing village. I'd agree that it would not be the place if you're looking for more excitement and activity, but it could be the perfect place if you want, well, a sleepy little fishing village.

I like the typical Mexican atmosphere of Progresso but if you are look for beautiful beaches and clear water, this is not the place for you. (the water and beaches, however, are similar to the US gulf coast resorts)
It is getting difficult to find a place to escape the tourists in this area. Playa del Carmen used to be the place but it is quickly going the way of Cancun. Puerto Morelos does remain a sleepy village, more or less, in spite of its location.
