You makes some very good points SambaChula, however, is it really necessary to make them quite so aggressively? I agree that too many people dole out the same dogmatic advice based on single experience from many years ago or, worse still, no experience at all and question the validity and helpfulness of both. However, this is an open forum and we are free to disagree with each other but lets at least try and keep it friendly.

As a former nonparticipant in these threads, I can only observe that if someone thinks there is a lack of civility here (Fodors in general) then they should never, ever even think of looking into a political forum!

I find This site one of the more "civilized" of the many. Far better than the nastiest on TA for instance, I stopped posting or reading there last year finding life far better with out that site.

Trip Advisor is very different place to place (within the destination forums). The one for Puerto Vallarta is very active and helpful and accurate in their information. So is Negril and Cabo San Lucas.

I know this thread and can't say enough about how well sambachula has responded.
I for one support it. As i have mentioned in the past... It's not because I have been to NY city that I can advise and suggest or recomend on San Francisco... even if I mention it beforehand. The person asking the question ils NOT interested in a personal advice on something this person has read in a magazine or on thé internet, but in personal EXPERIENCE. Someone who bas actually set foot in the area, who has an actual FEEL and lived it !
One would think that this would ne an absolute prerequisit...

Rohelio, You really shouldn't speak for other people. How do you know what they are or are NOT interested in hearing about?

As long as replies are **honest** & clear about the source whether it is 1st or 2nd hand information being relayed.

I think it's OK to post: "In the most recent issue of National Geo Traveler, there was an article about XXX which recommended..." OR "On Trip Advisor forum the resort you are asking about gets consistently favorable reviews". OR even (heaven forbid) "My friends stayed there and liked it a lot".

Posting 2nd hand information is only a problem from my point of view if you try to pass it off as your own EXPERIENCE.
