please recommend Guadalajara hotel

I'm thinking of sending my parents to Mexico next year - a few days in Puerto Vallarta followed by a few days in Guadalajara.

Can anyone please recommend an old-fashioned, quaint hotel in Guadalajara within walking distance of attractions? (They're staying in a chain hotel in PV so I figured for Guadalajara, they could do a small, boutique hotel).

Also, please post the hotel's website, if there is one. Thanks so much!

If budget is not a problem, then definitely the Quinta Real. Beautiful place.

We stayed at Hotel De Mendoza. It was a very good to excellent hotel, 2 blocks from the center of town, within walking distance from everything, small (~100 rooms, but not boutique), and inexpensive. We had a suite, which was well worth the few extra dollars. As I understand it, Quinta Real is 20 minutes from town.

You can find my report by typing in "report guadalajara" in the search box. It would be nice if you would post a short report when your parents come back as to which hotel they stayed at and how they liked it. ((C))

Jean & Jed,

Thank you both for your suggestions. I've actually narrowed it down to Quinta Real & Hotel Mendoza (QR seems much nicer but is farther from downtown whereas Hotel Mendoza is in downtown). I've tried searching for more pictures on the web of HM but seem to come across the same one, even on their website.

Jean: Did you like being away from downtown?

Anyone have any thoughts on Hotel Felix?

Thanks!!!!

Highly recommended the Hotel Francés, 50 steps off the main square, cathedral to your left, Teatro Degollado to your right as you enter the square. Oldest hotel in Guad, they say, European in design, right down to the birdvage elevator. Good service, clean, European classy, no Holiday Inn, modern plastic look.

Another vote for Hotel de Mendoza. Moderate price, excellent location and service, and decent (but not lavish) rooms. Unlike the Quinta Real there's plenty of places within a 4-6 block radius to both sightsee and eat at, unlike the venerable Frances (a great place to stop in for drinks, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night) the rooms are quiet and the plumbing is up to US snuff.

Most of the staff seems to speak some English; Enrique who says he's worked for the hotel for 24 years is quite fluent, having worked in the hotel industry in Santa Barbara CA for a number of years, and is quite helpful, pointing out places to go and see by foot, cab, and organized tour.

Recommended!

Small Inn, cozy, beautiful, great value & service! Worth a look... found it in the printed 2004 Fodor's guide and was pleasantly surprised. Quinta Don Jose in the Tlaquepaque area of Guadalajara... quintadonjose.com
