Please give me some suggestions - nonresort

We are thinking about going to Mexico or maybe someplace farther south later this winter.

We've been to Cancun (35 years ago when it was just getting going) and Mexico City on business, but we've never been anywhere else there.

We'd prefer to stay someplace with a beach, but not a fancy resort as we don't use resort type stuff. A nice room or cabana kind of thing would be perfect. We'd prefer local places to eat and drink. We like privacy and quiet.

Any suggestions?

Thank you so much in advance.

Go to Panama. Fly into PTY, rent a car, drive up to Santa Clara and spend a week on a gorgeous beach eating freshly caught corbina. That's a great vacation!

On the Pacific side about an hour and half drive from Panama City on good roads.

We loved Playa del Carmen - an hour from Cancun @ the Hotel Mimi del Mar... inexpensive but VERY clean, 19 room hotel , literally on the beach. No resort amenities, but everything we wanted.

You could try Al Cielo hotel in the mayan Riviera. It is 4 rooms right on the beach. We were there last year and it is very convenient to other things to do in Akumel or Playa Del Carmen and very relaxing. The beach is beautiful in that area. It was very windy when we were there in February and I guess that is not unusual. The bathrooms are a little rustic but that wasn't a really a big deal because it so charming.

Just verify they aren't having any weddings while you there, the music was blaring.
