playa or Isla for anniversary ??

I am planning an anniversary trip for 4 nights for me and husband for October. We were thinking of going back to playa Del Carmen. We had gone a few years ago and loved it. We are looking for a nice resort, good restaurants, preferable somewhere walkable w a town to explore and some nightlife. We don’t club but like beach bars and live music. Should we go back to playa or should we consider somewhere else such as Isla Mujeres ?

I would go to Isla Mujeres since most of the east facing beaches have been plagued with sargassum to some degree or another since this spring. Playa Norte and Playa Sol are sargassum free for the most part. There are over 100 restaurants on the 5 mile long island and plenty of beach bars.

Agree with Jamie, although to be honest I've not been to PDC in a long, long time so can't comment on that. But we were in Isla this past January. Isla is just so walkable and easy to get around. Rent a golf cart for a day and explore the island. As far as nightlife, there was a time back in the day when there wasn't much to speak of. But that's changed in the last 20 years. Avenida Miguel Hidalgo North of Matamoros has plenty of live music. Plus there are plenty of quieter places too.

I have been to neither but was researching Isla Mujeres just recently and thought it looked like a great option. The Trip Advisor destination forum for Isla is very active and helpful (questions being answered about beach bars, new restaurants, etc.). Plus I easily found maps, photos, hotel information online. A few hours of research I felt gave me a pretty good idea of what I'd find there.

I haven't been to PDC so can't compare but Isla Mujeres is perfect for a four night getaway. If you stay on Playa Norte, there are lost of restaurants, shops within walking distance. We stayed at Privilege Aluxes and we loved it. If you are considering that hotel, though, I would urge you to book the suite, rather than a standard or superior room. Huge difference between them for not much more money.

I have been to both places many times over the years and for a short 4 day trip, both areas are recommended, especially if you loved Playa. I guess it depends on your taste in restaurants and at what time you usually retire for the evening. If it’s late then go Playa ... one thing for sure, in 4 days, you will have seen IM in its entirety, especially if you rent a VW or a golf cart. For sûre, you will love the beaches....

Hmm was seriously considering Isla but doesn’t seem to have as many choices for resorts. Thibk we just do playa again. Thanks for the help !

Isla hasn't been affected by all the sargassum. If a nice beach is important to you, go to Isla.

The golf carts were so fun. Loved that feature of the island.

There are a couple AI's on North Beach. Mia Reef and Privelege Aluxes.

A good little hotel right in center of Playa is Hotel Aventuras Mexicana between 5th ave. (Quinta) and 10th. You can choose between a meal plan or just accommodations. With the hundreds of restaurants all around you, the choice in my mind would be obvious. Playa has something for everyone...

Privilege Aluxes was excellent and it isn't mandatory all inclusive. We had a room package with breakfast included. There were sufficient number of restaurants walking distance that I wouldn't want to do an all inclusive there.

AIs on Isla are nothing at all like AIs on the mainland with multiple restaurants, nightclubs, shows, etc. There are only 4 to being with, PA is AI optional and has 3 restaurants, Zoetry Villa Rolandi has 2, Isla Mujeres Palace used to only have 1 and not sure about Mia Reef.
