Playa Mujeres
 

My husband and I have been looking into a vacation in Playa Mujeres. It looks like a lovely area, but I'm hoping those on this site can answer a few questions before we make our decision.

We are looking to stay at Excellence or Beloved resorts. Has anyone stayed at either of these resorts? Can you please comment on the following:

What are the beaches like at these resorts? Are they swimable for two folks in their 50's who are not strong swimmers?

How far away is Cancun and its busy tourist area? We would like to explore, but do not want to be too close to the crowds in Cancun.

How far of a drive is it to any ruins?

What tours do you recommend?

I have not stayed there, closest I came was some years ago when we took the car ferry to Isla Mujeres from Punta Sam. It is a gated community, probably nice if you are looking for a "fly and flop" vacation. About a $35-40 cab ride one way into Cancun. You can take a taxi to the Ultramar ferry at Gran Puerto and do a daytrip to Isla Mujeres.
Good advice to check the TA forums, a lot of real Playa Mujeres enthusiasts on there.

I haven't been there, only Cancun and Isla Mujeres. But I know it's about 15 km from the center of Cancun. I'm not sure what tourists crowds you want to avoid, the only ones I can think of would be maybe around some of the chain restaurants/bars in the Hotel Zone, so just don't go to the Hotel Zone. Otherwise, why would you even go to Cancun? If you go to the central market, for example, you can't avoid crowds. I presume something in Cancun appeals to you and would have guessed that might be it.

Other than that, the only thing I can think of would be the Mayan culture museum and archeological site, which is worth a visit,

By nature, museums have tourists in them but I wouldn't worry about it.

I was not impressed by the central market, actually, it was a zoo and a lot of vendors who harrass you.
