Playa fishing expedition recommendations?

My husband and I will be going to the Barcelo Maya in June. He would like to go on a deep sea fishing expedition. On other vacations, he has been on a couple good trips but mostly bad ones, when they catch absolutely nothing. Does anyone have any recommendations on tour companies or specific boats? Thanks!

There's really very little to catch in the Playa del Carmen area of El Caribe.

Some Sailfish March, April and maybe May but apart from that save your money/go to Ixtapa instead.

If you could please e-mail me directly, I have an abundant information on the fishing in that area and the name of a very good guide. Depending on the time of year you went in the past, paying a guide to take you out, does not guarante, catching fish. Some months are just horrible and nobody is catching anything. However, June is not one of those months-in fact May and June are the two better months. I think I can help here

I always use Captain Edy Pena. He is located in Playa in front of the Porto Real. I believe he will pick your husband up right at the hotel. Fishing has been good this season. Talked to him the other day and his boat landed a couple of sailfish-one was 80lbs-which is big for taht area. You can reach Edy at [email protected]

My husband and I just returned from Playa yesterday. What a wonderful, beautiful place! We did a half day fishing expedition with Captain Ricks. Not only did we catch a lot of fish, but had a wonderful time. Captain Ricks is located 20 minutes from Playa del Carmen ($18.00 US taxi ride) and the little resort area that the office is in is great. When we got done fishing we had a wonderful lunch and looked thru the shops, then caught a taxi back to Playa. Good luck and good fishing! Let me know, should you have any other questions...

Thanks for your responses. Ali - I found Captain Rick's website and it is very close to our hotel. How much did you pay for the half-day? How many people were on the boat with you? Do you remember the name of the boat that you were on? Thanks!

Indy - we booked the half day trip thru our tour company (olympus) I think it was $65.00 US for a fisherman. We had four fisherman on our boat, two non fisherpeople (along for the ride), the captain, and a boat hand. I am sorry I don't remember the name of the boat, the boat hand was Raul, and the Captain was Salvador. The morning we went out there were five or six other boats that went out and all caught fish (alot of mahi mahi). I do know that you can request a boat just for yourself, but I don't know the cost. Make sure to be prepared for sea sickness, one person on out boat got sick, and on another boat one guy couldn't even bring in his fish because he was sick.

PS - We did bring in a sailfish the day we went out - what a beautiful thing to watch.

Just take some motion sickness pills with you and take it an hour before going on the fishing trip. I always do this before going on a fishing trip and have never gotten sick.
