Playa del Carmen: Favorite Restaurants,Please
 

We will be in PDR end of January,and have checked postings for restaurant sugggestions,most of which seem to be a bit dated.Please share your favorites.We love seafood !! ALSO,we are staying in Chichen Itza for 2 nights.Restaurant suggestions ??

Ok, restaurants....for seafood I really like La Bamba Jarocha. If you walk up Constituyentes to 30th Avenue and turn right it is on the right hand side about two or three blocks down. There are beads hanging between the outside and the tables. I love the paella, shrimp fra diavolo and cazuela. Other favorites include La Pesca which is on 30th Ave also but you turn left at 30th when walking down Constituyentes and it will be on the west side of 30th. They also make a great cazuela. El Fogon for pork tacos with pineapple. Walking up Constituyentes again it will be on the north side of the street on Constituyentes right between 25th and 30th Avenues. On the corner of Constituyentes and 25th Ave is a little Passateria that makes good sandwiches and crepes but has great banana split crepes...very yummy. For italian food I like Il Pescatore on 10th Ave and I think 24th street. If you're walking up Constituyentes turn right on 10th Ave and walk down a few blocks. It is on the east side of the street on the corner. Just one block further on the same street is a good argentinian place. Babe's Noodle Bar(my husband likes the swedish meatballs) is good on 5th as is Gaia also on 5th. All these are at the north end of town by Shangri La. Yaxche for traiditional Mayan food further downtown is a little more pricey but very nice. Manne's Biergarten on Friday nights for pork roast is absolutely yummy. I think Manne has a website for directions, etc. Manne and his wife are from Berlin. There's also a special on ribs on Wednesday nights. There's so many places to eat that are not on the main tourist drag. Don't be afraid of venturing forth.

One other thought that I forgot...to get to Constituyentes from Shangri La walk out of the resort heading west until you get to the fountain in the middle of the street. Make a left there onto 5th ave. Walk down until you reach another traffic circle with another fountain in the middle. This is Constituyentes. Make a right to walk to the restaurants I named. If you walk to the left on Constituyentes you will walk back down to the water. The Royal Playa del Carmen will be on your left and the Gran Porto Real on your right.

Those maps are great....I have several.
But, some things change so often it's hard to keep up. I just heard this week that HC de Monterray (Super Carne) has opened on Constituyentes which is right around the corner from me....excellent arracherra. I'll be looking for that one. It should be right around the El Fogon location.

Colokid's recommendations are right on target.

La Bamba Jarocha, VERY informal, is actually one of Jacque Pepin's favorite spots in PDC (he has a condo there). Also, the ceviche we had at La Palapa, also very casual, was some of the best we've ever had anywhere. Don't miss Dr. Taco if you are in town. It is small but very well known and has outstanding shrimp tacos (calamari) too. At Yaxche we had a great cochinito pibil. As good as we've had anywhere. Really melt in your mouth good. Also, El Asador de Manolo is a good parilla, with very good empanadas.

I love El Fogon, great food great price and really Mexico. There are some of them. One on 30th and Calle 6 bis, one on Constituentes between 25th and 30th and I think one more down the 30th around Calle 30.
My seafood place is Brisas at 10th and Calle 4. Great and cheap seafood.
There are many more great places, just try. The more Mexicans the cheaper and the more typical Mexican food you will get.

I'll have to check out Brisas. Haven't been to that one yet. Is it by La Famaglia or Manne's?

Also love Pelicano's in Puerto Morelos if you're up that way. Great location, shrimp soup, and cerviche. Love to sit out on the veranda and watch the people fishing.

One of our favorite seafood restaurants is La Pesca on 30th Avenue near Constituyentes. The owner, Antonio, is there every night and makes everyone feel welcome. Our favorite dish is the Cazuela de Camorones, a thick creamy bisque of shrimp and cheese. Excellent food, very low prices.

We also recently went to a tasting at a newly opened seafood restaurant,the Grotto World Seafood on Calle 10 between 5th Avenue and 1st Avenue. The food is wonderful. It features ecletic dishes from around the world, all excellently prepared. Upscale and pricey, but very good.

We also love Babes, El Fogon, HC Monterrey, El Nativo and of course our regular spot for traditional Mexican Food, La Quinta Pasion on Calle 26th between 5th Avenue and 10th Avenue.
