Playa del Carmen Beach Question

Hi There! My husband, son and I have gone to Hawaii the last couple of years for spring break and although we've always had a great time, this year I'm trying to switch gears a bit and am therefore eyeing Mexico - specifically, Playa del Carmen - as our spring break destination.

My question is regarding the level of waves at the beaches around Playa del Carmen in April. My son is now 10 and absolutely loves to play in the waves. (The ones at Waikiki were about perfect size.) All of the photos I have seen around Playa show gorgeous beaches, but with little or no wave action. Is this generally accurate? And if so, are there any nearby beaches that have larger waves?

Thanks to all in advance for your input!

Hi! I have only been there once - a few years ago in March- but we did a lot of body surfing. The waves were great. Obviously I don't know if that was atypical of the wave action, but we had a blast.

I've been to Playa three times and there has always been a little wave action....perfect for a 10 year old IMO.

Thanks Chuckster and Ally! My son will feel much better knowing there will be waves to play in on our vacation.

Isn't it amazing how they take the photos on such calm days???
