My husband and I are planning a vacation in May. I was wondering if anyone has stayed in an oceanfront condo, with a swimming pool that they would recommend, or an adults only, oceanfront hotel.

Adults only oceanfront hotel would be Royal Playa del Carmen.

The Royal PDC is AI but is very nice and a good deal for what you get. I would return and I'm not a big AI fan.

My wife and I just got back from a week at the Iberostar Tucan AI. It was great! Excellent food and service. Most of the beach was washed out however from a tropical storm two months ago. The Iberostar has a larger complex a bit further north. I imagine that their beach is ok. The Iberostar chain, we think, offers excellence in service and their grounds are beautifully kept with a Mayan theme, great beach, peacocks and flamingoes leisurely walk thru their sculpted gardens. I think you might really enjoy the Iberostar.

I'm sure many people would like some info since there's been so many questions on other boards about the beach. Did you see any evidence of the beach returning or was there still the large drop off to get down to the water?

My guess is that about 75% of the beach was washed away. The Iberostar is currently building reinforced support for the building by the Dive center and they are installing large breakwater barriers in front of the beach. There is still enough beach for enjoyable sunbathing. I was at another resort that Dressel Divers works out of (unfortunatley I don't remeber the resort name)and their beach was untouched by the storm so I think that many resorts were spared from the damage associated with this particularr storm.

The Royal is one of the options that we are looking at for a girl's birthday trip in Oct.

Has anyone booked this place through expedia or sites like that? It looks like a $200 savings or so this way. I have booked separate parts of a trip this way, but never the whole package. Any downfalls in this method?

Xaman Ha condos are ocean front, have a pool, and are just a few short blocks to 5th Avenue (maybe a 3 minute walk).

i have found a website with lots of useful info on the area (and aerial pics of the beaches so you can see what they look like - rocky, sandy, grassy, ect....) they also list places to stay that ARENT hotels... list houses and condos to rent! www.locogringo.com - hope this helps - they DO give hotel info as well. I found that all the aerial pics are really helpful (and they have a live webcam on the beach)
