Pesos on arrival?
Heading to PV next week and can't wait. Am looking for advise relative to buying pesos in the US prior to departure so that we arrive there with local currency in hand. Is this a good idea? If so, how much? I know the hotels and other local establishments will convert $US to pesos, but in the past we've always taken some pesos with us...just been a long time since we've traveled to Mexico. What's the smart thing to do? Thanks!

You'll be fine without any until you get there. Most cabs take US dollar bills (be sure to ask how much the ride is before taking one). If you want the best exchange rate, have the cab driver take you to a bank to exchange. At most hotels, the exchange rate is not as good. Have fun!

You don't need peso until you are in town.
Then go to an ATM machine and withdraw direct or any "casa de cambio" change window, they are literally all over town. You can use your hotel front desk, some offer comparable rates and others not so good. The rates should be posted wherever you go. You can also go to a bank, but I don't see the sense of waiting in line when there are other more convenient options for simple transactions When you get off the plane, the booth where you buy your taxi ticket at the airport takes US dollars or peso. The price depends on what zone your hotel is in. If you really want to (for whatever reason) you can buy them at home, but you will get a poor rate of exchange and possibly have to pay a fee in addition. Re post above: The advice is slightly misleading regarding taxis. If you are taking a taxi from airport property, they are regulated and the prices are set. You buy a ticket from the booth and take it outside to the line-up where you are assigned a driver. The cabs are white. Once you are in town (cabs are yellow) then the comments above are valid. |
There's at least one atm right in the PV airport which is very convenient...

No fee ATMs and No/low fee CCs as always.
Your timing is good as the USD has gained strength in the last several weeks (from 10.36 to nearly 11.0). M |
