Peru - tours, when to go?

We plan on visiting Peru between August 2004 and March 2005. When is the best time of year to visit?
Which company has good escorted tours to Peru?
Which comapny has good independent tour packages to Peru?
Thanks in advance.

I went to Peru in November of this past year. I booked my tour with Lost World Adventures. Denise handled my arrangements. I went with three friends. Our travel was with a private guide and driver and no other "travellers". The trip was completely tailored to our interests. I had never travelled with a tour company but these people were fantastic. Our guides (we had a local guide in each city we visited) were wonderful, service was first class. Denise knows Peru very well and she did a great job of suggestions for hotels (we preferred quaint and historical to glitz) and restaurants.
We had gorgeous weather the whole time. The most popular time of visits is apparently between July and October. December through March is considered rainy season.
My only advice is to go now. Machu Picchu is being loved to death and it is an unforgettable experience. The Peruvians were lovely and very welcoming people.

PS I check this board regularly and did not see any of your earlier postings of this question. I really don't know how I missed them. Anyway, you might want to run a search of my name just to see some of the restaurant and hotel suggestions I have previously posted.
Again, have a wonderful trip. You will love Peru.

One more observation, I did a search under Peru and your posting does not appear. Weird, isn't it?
