Peru Questions

My family will be visiting South America in June 2008. We plan on spending one week in Argentina and the other in Peru.

We are interested in Lima, Cuzco, Machu Picchu, and the Sacred Valley.

Is this doable in one week? Are there tour operators that you recommend?

Thank you in advance for your help.

A week would really be more like a taste of the area than a full visit. That's OK but you will need to allow a day or 2 in Cuzco to get used to the altitude. We did a quick visit there organized by Jimina at 1st Class Argentina. We only had 1/2 a day in Lima with an organized city tour. Then a couple of days in Cuzco, a bus tour from Cuzco through the Sacred Valley with a stop at the Pisac markets. We caought the train from the valley to Machu Picchu and had two days and 1 night there. Caught the train back to Cuzco for overnight and flew to Lima the next day. We enjoyed it very much but it was really only enough to tell us we need to go back with more time for Peru next time. We did not feel rushed anywhere except Lima.Jimena is very helpful and she does most of her business over the internet. I don't have her email address handy but she has a good website if you google 1st Class Argentina.

It's definitely doable in a week if you are not hiking the trail. Here are some of my prior posts on Peru. I've been twice, the first time with a native.

I highly recommend a day trip to Ica to see the Nazca lines. You can do the trip from Lima:

And here are a couple of other posts on Peru:

One week in Peru should be fine.

Arrive in Lima and leave the next morning. One day is enough.

Spend a day or two in Cusco then head for MP. We overnighted in Aguas Calietes just in case we had weather issues or wanted to spend more time at MP. (We were fine.)

Then, another day or two in Cusco on the way back to see what you missed.
