Passport required?

Hi, I'm Canadian and my husband and I have traveled to Mexico many times and he has never used a passport only his picture id (drivers license) and birth certificate. We were told he still does not require a passport for Mexico. Is this true? What do you "mexican experts" from Canada know about this.

i'm from the usa, but in january '07, we will have to have passports to enter Mexico. Not sure re. Canada, but
i'll bet it'd be similar.

Little_Man Dec 13th, 2006 11:51 AM

just looked it up, yes that includes Canada as of January 8 07.

Actually, everyone will need passports to enter the US by air on 8 Jan '07 and by ship and road in Jan '08 (???).
Mexico has no formal PP requirement, but it seems silly to travel internationally without one and many have had problems with in country air travel without PPs.

It's the US that is changing it's passport rules in January. If you're Canadian, and you don't have to connect in the US, you won't need one. But, if there are mechanical or weather issues with your plane and you have to land in the states, it's going to be a major hassle. I'd just get a passport.

I can't imagine not having a passport - it's one of my most prized possessions. Is there a reason your husband doesn't want one? Just curious...please ignore if the question is too personal.

My husband feels that if he doesn't have to spend the $85 to get one for Mexico then he won't. He's never had any problems using his other id and he's not interested in visiting the US, so he never got an new passport when the old on expired.

According to the US Department of State the change over date is Jan. 23, 2007 not Jan 08. This is for air only. Ground changes will be in effect in Jan 2008.

Not being picky but just didn't want people to panic.
