Returning to England, life has caught up with us somewhat and our blog has taken a back seat. However, for anyone that is interested, further to my comments earlier in this thread, I have just posted about our time in the fun city of Guanajuato @ https://accidentalnomads.com/2018/11/29/guanajuato/

Definitely worth stopping off there for a few days if heading north of Mexico City.

Just a superb report. Interesting to me especially because I spent a lot of time in Mexico in throughout the 80s, writing guidebook chapters on Chiapas and Oaxaca. Your report confirmed what I had feared about San Cristobal. No desire to return there, for the moment. A town that small cannot withstand the numbers of tourists, I do not think, without a big change and not for the better.

On the other hand, we spent about 8 days in Oaxaca city three years ago (I'd been there for many weeks throughout the years) and I look forward to returning there. Next winter we plan to spend a week or so in Merida, another city I've not been in years.

And Zacatecas..never been and now thanks to your comments, will work that in to a trip soon.

My partner disliked DF when we took his first time there in 2014, so I am looking at Guadalajara for a base for another trip. Went to school there in the 70s!! My first experience with an illegal herb was at a soccer game with my school-mates.

I must put in here that Mexico is supremely easy for a solo female traveler, despite the bad news we see in the press. I've spent lots of time, solo, in cities and towns, big and small, in most of the states of Mexico and cannot remember ever feeling insecure in the least.

Que Viva Mexico Lindo y Querido!!

Thank you ekscrunchy. Glad you enjoyed.
"My first experience with an illegal herb was at a soccer game with my school-mates." mine was after a Rugby game at school, also in the 70s . They say you always remember your first time :-)

It is a shame about San Cristóbal, but it happens to a lot of similar places around the world. There are a lot of beautiful places in Asia that I just would not return to.

On the other hand, Oaxaca seems to have absorbed toursist much more easily, perhaps because it is that much larger. We loved our time there in the run up to Christmas and my wife is already taliking if returning for a longer stay, maybe renting a house or apartment.

Guadalajara I wasn’t quite so impressed with, but that was probably because we were there for the few days over Christmas and a lot was closed down.

Merida is also on the list to visit on a return. It was a toss up between there and Morelia where we spent a few days en route to Guadalajara ( and loved it!)

I echo your comments re safety in Mexico. I am neither female nor a solo traveller but I cannot recall feeling the least unsafe anywhere in the country. The people are amongst the friendliest of any we have encountered anywhere on our travels. It was much, much easier to travel around than I had expected. Safety just was not an issue.

We are currently also doing a 7-8 week trip in Mexico. 4 weeks in we are really loving it. We went to Cancun, Cozumel (great for diving), Tulum and Merida. Now we just arrived in Mexico City and Wow, what a city!

We really loved Tulum and Merida. Merida felt really local and the food was amazing. I'll write a separate post about that.

We are travelling Latin America for 6 months. We started in Mexico and will make our way down to Brazil. We share our adventures on Youtube (we have a video on Cancun, Tulum and Merida). You can find us at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC59...h29VrvdmeA2nEg

Susan, glad your first knee is doing great. I’m in my 70’s and the one knee I had replaced was a breeze. Omg. I didn’t even need physical therapy. After a few days of pain I was out and about with a cane just for safety. I’m always sincerely so sorry to hear that some people have a difficult time recovering. I tell of my excellent experience as encouragement to others.

Have fun in Portugual!

For anyone interested my wife just posted the first of several entries re Oaxaca to our blog @ https://accidentalnomads.com/2019/03/06/oaxaca/

Great TR. We have visited all the places you report on. Some back in the 90’s. Interesting to read updates on the ones we haven’t been to in so many years. Those little villsges outside San Cristobal tourist sites - we had them to ourselves. Too bad San Cristobal has turned into a tourist haven. I loved Zacatecas and had a similar experience with the music and tequila. It was a wedding and we still have the little cups they gave us. Anyway thanks for your TR. Mexico is one if my fav countries.
Where to next?

ekscrunchy Mar 29th, 2019 08:52 AM

Shelley, I've been to San Cristobal several times. I've gone by bus from DF, driven from Oaxaca, and flown to Tuxtla. The bus is fine, and unless they have built an airport in Las Casas, you have to take a taxi or bus to get there from Tuxtla. Probably best to just fly to Tuxtla, but all depends on your other destinations and time limits. I am very happy to read that Las Casas is still charming. My visits to that town were in the late 80s and 90s..long time ago.

I've visited most of Mexico, from Copper Canyon south to two of the borders with Guatemala. And down Baja to San Jose del Cabo and San Lucas. But never been to Zacatecas. Looks like I have to include that city next time..sounds excellent!!

Great report, Crellston, as usual for you! Mil gracias!!

Thanks yestravel and ekscrunchy. "Where to next?"

A very good question that we have been deliberating over during the last few weeks. Like you YT, we were seriously considering Japan but decided that it made more sense to include that as a long stopover on a visit to Australia to see family in Sydney next year. We looked hard at a return to Mexico and/or Central America but finally (95%! ) decided on somewhere new and came up with South Africa. Now busy trying to work out some sort of itinerary for November and December.

Crellston!

Not more than two days ago, my wife said, now that we are back from Vietnam, you are going to have to find your "Mexican" Crellston! We are going to Costa Rica and Mexico for 3 months starting in Nov. 1. So I go to Fodors and there is your wonderful Trip Report on...wait for it...Mexico! Hats off m'lord.

el8482 Apr 5th, 2019 06:36 AM

It is my dream to go there for more than a week and we are gonna do it this year! Thanks for motivation

crellston Apr 5th, 2019 10:27 PM

Hi Tiddy12 - it’s a small world!

I don’t profess to be an expert on Mexico, there are others here with way more experience than I, who were invaluable to me in planning the trip. There is a planning thread somewhere with my name on it where I got loads of great advice. Currently I am trying to balance planning our SA trip with writing up our blog entries to expand upon my TR here, I will post links as and when - it’s a hard life!

FWIW we absolutely loved Mexico, it’s scenery, people and food. One of the friendliest places on the planet. It was a hard choice not to return this year but we felt we needed somewhere completely new.

Who knows, one of these days we may end up in the same place at the same time. It would be great to meet up.

Tdiddy12 Apr 6th, 2019 06:36 AM

It would be a joy to meet! We go to Mexico every year in January, usually to the same place, Zihuatenejo but this year we are branching out. Happy Trails.
P.S.
I've been reading your blog and we are just starting to venture into the house sitting realm, it seems like a lot of fun and since our dear dog passed two years ago, we can meet some furry friends.

crellston Apr 8th, 2019 10:53 AM

We love house and pet sitting! Currently, I am looking out over the sea from a house on England”s east coast, with a very relaxed black Labrador sitting at my feet. it is nice to have a variety of furry friends around the world
