Osa Peninsula in October
Is the Osa Peninsula/Corcovado worth visiting this time of year (October) despite the heavy rains? What are the logistics involved?
Thanks! |
Most wouldn't choose that area in October. There is enough rain to really hamper any and all plans. Of course, it could be done, but the cost of going there is so much that I'd sure hate to spend most of my time in the rain! Also, many of the hotels close during October or run with a minimum staff. On the other hand, I guess you'd get more personalized attention!

I think I'll wait until the rains taper off somewhat before attempting Osa then - the other replies have said the same thing about the difficulty of making it past all the rain. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't giving up (or postponing, in this case) until I'd heard from others who have already made that trip. Thanks shillmac!

My husband and I were there in October of 2002 and we had wonderful weather. I guess it all depends on the specific season. We stayed at the Iguana Lodge and took day trips from there.

Yeah, the rain thing is hard to call. What we have to look at is what GENERALLY happens. Little rain on the Osa in October is a rare thing. Usually there is a LOT. It's great to get lucky though, and we have several times, all over the country. We usually try to stay with "the odds" though.
Our trips in late June, all of July, and some of August have always been wonderful with light to moderate rain and no interference--for years. However, on another post, ShellD wrote that they got so much rain this year in July and August that they will never travel during those months again. GENERALLY, that's not going to happen, but it did to thing in the locations they chose. On the other hand, we were there during the exact same time and had great luck with rainfall. It rained one afternoon at Peace Lodge starting soon after lunch. That was fine because we love the gorgeous rooms, balconies, and firepaces, so being confined in them certainly is no bummer! Also, in Manuel Antonio, 5th-8th of August, it rained about 2:00 until 5:00 or so. Worked okay for us because we had already worn ourselves and our granddaughter out at the pool and beach for 6 hours or so and were ready to nap--watch movies, sit on the balcony, read, etc. So these weather things are so much a matter of perspective. We have been so many times, we are not so gung ho to be out and about doing something with every minute of our time. The afternoon rains (if they come) don't get in the way at all. We do it all in the a.m. The afternoons are restful and relaxing, and it's okay with us. But again, GENERALLY October is not a good time for the Osa. And GENERALLY July works out just great for the majority of people. |
I just bought my ticket for my trip in October and am currently planning my itinerary. I had originally wanted to stay put in SJ - live like a (touring) local for a spell, so to speak - and just take day trips all over the country, but now I'm remembering how much fun I had zipping all across the country and staying at different places when I was there last and am vacillating. Since I've got five weeks for this trip, I'm thinking it would be a shame to miss Corcovado but the expense of trying to get there during heavy rains (potentially) might be beyond my budget. Still, I'm very excited (I leave end of September) and reading the posts here and researching have been really helpful. Verdict on Osa: undecided for the moment.
