OK to leave parts of trip unplanned/unbooked?

Hi!

With the help already of a couple of Fodor's peeps (thank you!), I'm booking away. I was considering reserving the first part of our 12-day trip (starting mid July) and leaving the second half unbooked (no hotel reservations). I'd book Osa first and then La Fortuna (and all activities). And then see where life takes us. Would there be any reason not to do this? We may, or may not, have a car in the La Fortuna area. Still debating.

Thank you!

I don't know a thing about Costa Rica, but I think the leaving things unbooked approach is a matter of personal preference.

For me I'd rather not spend precious travel time driving (bussing, walking) around a town looking for a place to stay that night. But for some people that's part of the adventure.

olive, I think I answered on your other post, but we're super planners - we book everything ahead so we can get specific hotels, views, etc. If you don't have your heart set on anything, that's not a busy time of year like Christmas is, so I think you would be fine.

They have telephones and internet access in CR. You can leave things open and call a day or two ahead, sort of a good idea in "green" season anyways.
