Off the Beaten Path in Mexico? Suggestions?

My husband and I (age 27 & 29)are thinking about taking his cousin & her daughter (age 35 & 14) to Mexico with us. We are all adventuresome and do not want to do Cancun, Playa del Carmen, or Cozumel like all the other tourists do. We've done that before. We want something out of the way. We would like a driving tour perhaps around the Yucatan peninsula looking at ruins, cenotes, caves, etc.

Does anyone have any suggestions? We want something off the beaten path. We have been to Chichen Itza, Coba, Tulum, etc. We are looking for something more out of the way.

Suggest go to Merida, a beautiful city that everyone seems to like, including us. Spend several days, to ruins of Uxmal and satellites--the most beautiful of Yucatan's Mayan ruins, stay for light show at night. Much different than CI. Go north few miles to Dzibilchaltun with its cenote, Temple of the Seven Dolls, etc. Then rent car in Merida and drive south to Campeche to ruins of Palenque--another class 'A' ruin--famous and beautiful. Drive back stoppng at Campeche or drive east from Campeche to the coast stopping at the ruins of Xpuhil, Becan, and Rio Bec, to coast and back up and over to Merida. Best not to drive these roads at night.

The Train Tours seem fascinating but I still recommend the Puuc Route.

South from Merida to Uxmal, then Kabah, Sayil, Labna, Xlapak, and the Cave at Loltun. Do it in your own car or hire a driver. Plan to spend at least two days, three is better.

Palenque is superb but I would fly there from Merida.
