Occotal Honeymoon!
 

Anyone have any experience with the Occotal Beach resort in costa rica.

I am thinking of an August Honeymoon. Do a little fishing and a lot of sitting in the sun!

Any info much appreciated!!!

Good morning, Yes I know very well Ocotal Resort and I know many people going there and satisfied, the view is famous (sun set)..service, food, and close to Playas del Coco for shopping and restaurant and bars...I am sure you will enjoy it! may will meet you once you are here I am working at the SPA very close to the hotel. The view is indeed spectcular from the rooms up top if you can get over the congrejos that enter the room and are found dead swimming in the pool. Weight room is filthy. The food is good, if you can get it....the fishermaen get first choice. We ordered and then the waiter came and told us all the food we requested had also been ordered by the group of fishermen there, so we needed to order something else. When we ordered something else, we were then told they were all out of that... wonder why? Three hours later we were served the leftovers. Town is uninteresting and the whole place was a long way from our other journeys. The whole atmosphere was a bit dreary. I was there in June and the sun didn't shine the entire time. Not a big sun worshipper so that didn't bother me. Apparently, it is a great fishing spot, but should you be dwelling on the catch when you are honeymooning? If you are a couple and not a fishing group, or if you should find yourself amongst a large group of fishermen staying there, you should know the fishermen's group will be catered to FIRST. I would suggest a trip to the Osa peninsula for a honeymoon. La Paloma (sunset rancho) or La Aguila de Osa on the Drake Bay side, or Lapa Rios or Bosque del Cabo on the Puerto Jimenez side. Thanks for the info. Your post is the first negative thing I have heard about the place. Right now we will be fishing, but not every single day. We have a package deal offered that's five nights with two days fishing.

Sounds like you would not recc. the place at all.

Matt, are you going with just your bride or a group of other fishermen? I think that makes a difference because at Ocotal they tend to cater to the big fishermen's groups. I was glad to have visited that area and the view from our room was great(I loved the big rock outcroppings) and the room spacious and clean. If I had a preference for a honeymoon though it would have to be the expensive lapa Rios on the Osa peninsula (flying into Puerto Jimenez) with it's mosquito covered beds, panaramic views from decks hanging over the jungle and oceon, wildlife in the trees all around... and you can hire a boat through them to fish too. You may not catch as much fish, but...www.laparios.com I was there in 1999, so things may have changed. I know they have more rooms now. Ask for one closest to the lobby. # three or four would be my choice.

*HA* In my post above it should have read, mosquito NET covered beds, not, "mosquito covered beds". Yikes, what a honeymoon that would be!

I would like to jump in on this just briefly...I would choose Bosque del Cabo way over Lapa Rios for several reasons. Have been to both-found the people at Bosque much more genuine and the property much more user friendly.

Regarding places to honeymoon and fish, I would look at Capitan Suizo, Florblanca if you want to be in the Nicoya/Guanacaste area. Some of the best fishing I have done was out of Quepos and it is right next door to the "Manuel Antonio" strip of lovely hotels. Manakanda by the Sea is an adult (over 16 hotel) and is a big honeymoon spot. Most of the hotels in the Manuel Antonio area are not on the beach but if you really want one you could go to Tulemar Bungalows but there will be families. This particular area offers way more than most for optional day tours and if you want fishing you could arrange to go out of Quepos.
