Someone asked a similar question recently. Do a search of either Papagayo or Smeralda. There were 8 responses to their question, the most recent on 3/14/03.
I am going through the same dilemna (sp?) as well. (There are lengthy trip reports you can find on other sites for the Occidental Allegro Papagayo.)

Not that it was mentioned but we loved the Melia Conchal...junior suites, biggest pool I have ever seen. The beach at the time was suffering from El Nina... also,, a few years ago it wasn an all inclusive, just semi- and we thought the food was great... Wish our charter company would go back...

You might want to try a small hotel called the Hotel La Finisterra in Playa Hermosa. Although, if you insist on "all inclusive", this is not your place. I saw several families at this jewel of a hotel that sits on top of a hill overlooking Playa Hermosa and Golfo de Papagayo. Finisterra has very nice accommodations (no AC, but ceiling fan was adequate when I was there in Feb./Mar.), a nice pool with one of the greatest cliff-side views I've seen, and, arguably, the best restaurant in Playa Hermosa. The beach is at the bottom of the hill. You can check out George and Sheila's website at http://www.finisterra.net/ as well as view photos/movie clips I took around that area of Guanacaste recently at http//www.speakeasy.org/~zebratoo/costarica/index.htm. Good luck!

Hi Debbie: For info on Allegro Papagayo go to :http://www.costaricamapguide.com/fs_public.htm
There are a number of trip reports here, just check all the past pages and something will show up.
As far as Smeralda goes, it has a small beach just a short 5 min walk from the hotel. Beautiful grounds, very nice pool. Not as new as it's sister property (Allegro) but closer to Playa Hermosa and Playa del Coco for more activities, shopping, bank, groceries, selection of tours. As a previous post mention, George and Sheila ( good Canadian friends) also have a wonderful spot in Playa Hermosa offering fantastic food and great views. I live here so if you need more info, some maps etc...just email me.
Michael
[email protected]

Hi Debbie,
I stayed at the Allegro Papagayo in August, 2002 and had a great time. The resort is built on the side of a mountain, with beautiful vistas. The food and accomodations are great. I posted a lengthy trip report on this site on my stay in Costa Rica, called "Trip Report, Costa Rica, Aug. 2002," in which I describe the resort in some detail. There's really not much of a beach, but there's plenty of activities, and the large winding pool and swim-up bar is very nice.

I spoke to other travelers who have stayed at Sol Playa Hermosa and they regretted not choosing the Allegro. The Allegro is more lively. It has a "fun-group" or something like that with lots of activities. My family and I had a great time. I hope this helps.

Jay
