Oaxaca - where to stay (and fax question)
Hello friends. I hope you can help with a bit of guidance. I want to find a hotel high on the atmosphere (and preferably walking distance from the zocalo) to introduce my children to Mexico. I am budget conscious (to 100 bucks/night) and need it rather quiet at night to sleep. Also, what do I dial first to fax from the Us to Oaxaca City?

If you can get a special you may be able to get a room at El Camino Real if you are willing to spend that much. It is beautiful and located close to the Zocalo. From U.S. to Oaxaca: 011 + 52 + City info.

Thank you. I'll look into it.

I would think both those places would be over your budget. I could suggest Las Bugambilias, a family-run B&B around the corner from the Camino Real, and easy walking distance to everything in the historic district. Quiet and pleasant, I think rooms with breakfast are around $70.

If you don't care about a pool there are many nice B/B's around the city; Las Bugambillias, Casa de Mis Recuerdos, Las Mariposas. Also some smaller hotels like Las Golondrinas, Casa Conzatti or even a Holiday Inn express are only a 10 min. walk to the zocalo in nice neighborhoods. El Camino Real is elegant, and the pool is very nice, but it will break the bank. Plus there are too many other good choices to eat around Oaxaca
