Oaxaca Evenings

My wife and I will be visiting Oaxaca from March 7-14.

We have an itinerary planned for the mornings and afternoons(see posting on Seniors 6 1/2 days in Oaxaca).

However, we need some suggestions on what to do in the evenings.

I'm sure people will have more creative ideas, but I found taking a seat at a cafe along the Zocalo and watching the world go by was enough for me.

We also enjoyed el Zocalo, the dinner + show at the beautiful hotel that was a convent in downtown
(forgot the name) is a nice option for one night.

The majority of people have something to drink here and there, stroll around the Zocalo and up and down the pedestrian street to Santo Domingo which is another place lots of people congregate. There is often street music or a precession or some type of activity taking place on a regular basis. Due to the climate people are out all the time. While wandering around you can pick a plce to eat, or sit in the Zocalo or at a cafe and watch the world go by. There are also, generally, locals and people from all over the world to talk to. I have been going down there for a long time and have always enjoyed the evenings.

Graziella is referring to the Guelaquetza show at the Camino Real Hotel. This takes place each Friday night and consists of dance performances representing each of Oaxaca state's ethnic groups. The buffet food is excellent and the entertainment is spirited and colorful. I was concerned that this would be an overly touristy event, but I really enjoyed it.

Thanks Martha, I had the same concern, but also we liked it. The Camino Real Hotel, itself is a wonderful place to visit. We stayed in nearby Las Bungeavillas and often criss crossed through the Camino Real.

Mostly we had a drink late afternoon, walked around the square and watched what was going on in the churches, checked the shops that were open late, then had a leasurely dinner before walking the Zocollo again and if it wasn't too cool, sat and had another drink. There seems to be always some type of entertainment going on in the cathedral area.
