No it does not, other than a very small corner near Fenix club and restaurant, which may be why tourism is up a lot and there are now sometimes lines for the ferry. I have also heard Cozumel has none on the west beaches, but have not been there so will not comment on conditions there. Possibly there is a webcam for Coz. Most of the sargassum is on east facing beaches.

The seaweed problem is GONE in Playa del Carmen and has been for about two months. No more seaweed there on the beach or in the water. We have been at our condo a half block from the beach in Playa in Nov., Dec, and are here now--- absolutely NO seaweed.
However, and this happens every few years, the currents have changed and there is less beach in town. Right now that is esp. true around Calle 10 through 14 at the beach. When we were in Playa in Dec. there was less beach esp. at high tide, the water came right up to the beach clubs. It is better now though, except around Calle10 through 14 or so. |
<<"Does Isla Mujeres have the same seaweed issues as on the mainland?">>
Isle of Mujeres has zero sargassem. And as said, I didn't see any on the mainland last time I was there, either. Where is the seaweed issue that's being discussed? As for the beaches in PDC, I personally think they're beautiful. Different from Tulum but it is the Caribbean. It really depends on what you want. PDC will offer more amenities and Tulum will offer wider beaches with less to do. Tulum also doesn't offer that many hotels and is getting a bit pricey. I also happen to know that there are still many areas and times of the year that PDC is not party central. You can find whatever it is you like there. |
I was in PDC a few years ago, and my recollection was most of the hotels were small, boutique places on or off 5th Ave.
If you stay there, you are at worst probably no farther from the sand than some buildings at big resort complexes. There were a few resorts on the beach in town, although I think they were AI. Of course, that doesn't mean you would have to eat all your meals there. Also, I think there's a new Hyatt in town (I looked at going to PDC later this month but booked Puerto Vallarta, instead). Oh, and Rohelio, chill out. If you don't like what Suze is posting, then ignore her. |
The new Hyatt in Playa is fantastic, right on the beach in center of Playa's beaches. Pricey, and a good place to use Hyatt points if you have them. We have had dinner at both restaurants at the Hyatt recently, the grill and the mexican ones, and they are both good.
