No money belts in Mexico City for safety should carry a purse?? Comments about this....

I never wear a money belt. I do carry a purse that straps across my body, and I shorten the straps when I'm concerned, so it's closer to me. I use the same purse here in Toronto after having had my wallet stolen here in Toronto twice - both times while on the streetcar coming home from work. It was easy for someone to reach in and take. With this type of purse, no one can easily get into it.

Always wear a money belt when traveling far from home. Thieves can easily use a knife to slash pocketbook straps. This sort of thing happens all the time.

Joyce, what difference does it make whether you're far from home or a block from home? One has to be alert all the time!

While in Mexico >City double your usual pracautions. Why not a belt I believe is the best option.

To Susan: Losing your credit cards and money when far from home causes many more difficulties than losing this stuff when you are in your home town. There is no comparison. Just imagine yourself in a strange country with no money or credit cards, maybe not even a passport. It would be a traumatic experience, completely ruining your vacation.

Losing this stuff when in your home town is inconvenient, but there is a big difference between temporary inconvenience and being put through extreme difficulties.

You've been very fortunate not to yet have your pocketbook ripped off your body, but I suggest you not press your luck. Tourists experience this type of theft everyday.

Mexico City is not Toronto. Although I like to visit there you must use extreme caution. Hiding you valuables somewhere inside your clothes is a must.

Believe me, I am extremely careful now about my belongings! Whether I'm in Mexico City or Toronto. But after 30 years of travelling, I still don't wear a moneybelt. I'm not saying that one shouldn't ............... obviously an individual decision.
