Night hikes - flashlight vs. headlamp?

We are planning to do at least two night hikes while in Monteverde/Santa Elena at different reserves. Which do you think is best - flashlight or headlamp?

Thanks!

Headlamps are a must. For one thing, better to be hands free, but more importantly it allows you to see the eyes of the wildlife better.

I'm a big headlamp fan, too, no comparison. You might want to pack a small flashlight as a backup, though.

I definitely agree - headlamps are the way to go. Also, when I didn't feel like wearing it, I could carry it in my hand just like a flashlight, and the strap made it easy to carry.

Thanks for the confirmation - headlamps are now on the list of things to buy before departure.
